Wax coated wick. Wax coating makes it rigid for easy insertion into a container.

I thought about that at first, but the one I have uses a flat wick,  so I figured candles would be a safer bet.

Most I've seen have flat wicks, but I did once see an old small one  with a wick like a candle. Probably wrong though.

You got me to thinking about it, and I believe I’ve seen small, mostly decorative ones with round/thin wicks. Even then they weren't coated as they rested in the reservoir, they had to be flexible. But I have seen them, I remember them being all glass.

Not wicks then and corset/girdle stays are flat. Unfortunately I never knew my grandparents.

The sticks go through a woman's hair when put up in a bun?

I'm liking your thinking Norm.      Don't give up now.     I think those other guys lost some hair over this one.

I’m obviously not very good at them, as I have yet to get one right before it’s revealed, but here’s my thinking now:

if they are fabric, and indeed wax coated, they would be bendable enough to be shaped around the edges of a wig, with the wax being heated either from another source or body heat to keep it firmly in place, but (more or less) easily removable.

Thats my best updated guess with the information at my disposal.

Now I'm trying to dig around to find something to stump you guys 😂

You are hot on the trail,  but you missed one of the key clue words.    Find it in post #30.

Let me know when you give up.    I don't want to stress any one over the brink  like @wallfish.

Marines don’t surrender.... I will think of something.

Don't mind the burning wood smell, that’s me.

Can I get positive confirmation that they’re fabric and wax or other wise coated? (Worth a shot 😂
