Not being ex-services over here, never mind in the states, I haven't a clue. At a wild guess, off a grenade or something similar.

To keep this going, the guy with the correct answer should have to post the next WHATIZIT.

Congrats Dave....you're up.   @Mows4three

Well folks. Dave is out gallivanting around at auctions and texted me this picture. Here is the description he sent with it.

20" long as it sits. 3/8" X 3/4" steel.

You are right Cas, but I think I saw one like it on "Forged in Fire".  :occasion-xmas:

It's a key ring with a Hooby Dooby on it.

Not quite. It does not go on any explosive device.

You could use it as one, would definitely distinguish your keys from anyone else’s 😂

Off a practice grenade? They don't explode, do they?

No, it doesn’t go on a grenade of any type, but you’re in the right thinking that it’s used for practice/training. Different piece of equipment though.

Practice grenades are steel balls (reusable) that have a fancy smoke bomb in them. They do “explode” but only into a cloud of smoke, as any explosive force is contained and disrupted by the steel wiffle ball that holds the charge.

The “explosion” is much more pronounced when the fuse/Charge mechanism is placed inside of a cored Apple instead of a steel ball, or so I’ve heard. :hide:

While it appears the M31 has the potential to be a Nut Cracker of sorts, should it function properly, that is not the correct answer 😂

Hint: This is a government issued item.

What is it and what purpose does it serve?

Looks like a valve gag for preventing a steam safety valve from lifting during testing.

Ha!  Loved the added bonus of the story on the M-31 arresting gear.   I could use some help today in that area.  I'm so tired my tail hook is dragging far, far behind me....!!!!

Thank you for your service, Marine!

Cheers!

Not a rafter spreader, but you're definitely thinking in the right DIRECTION.

That is not it. Stormin is in the ball park though.

If anyone gives up, I’ll reveal the answer.

Just had an epiphany.   Is this the safety devise that goes over the end of the barrel on an M4 carbine and is used during training exercises?

Dave

It can fit any M16 variant. It is called a Blank Firing Adapter (BFA). From Wikipedia:  “blank-firing adapter or blank-firing attachment (BFA), sometimes called a blank adapter or blank attachment, is a device used in conjunction with blank ammunition. Blank firing adapters are required for allowing blanks to cycle most automatic firearms. It can also be a safety feature designed so if a live round is mistakenly fired, most of the energy is spent smashing through the BFA reducing both the range and damage inflicted. A BFA may also divert the hot gases from a blank discharge out to the sides, reducing the risk of injury to the target of an aimed shot.[1]

Just got back, busy family day yesterday. That was a good one. I would not figure that one out ever.Good thing to know. With the exception of gun stocks I am totally illiterate about guns. Lets work on the other one.
