Can you repower a short frame with a 12hp?

I have a 857 with a 5hp honda on it. The honda doesn't do it for me. I know where there is a low hour 12hp kohler turn key engine. It has the "big base". What if anything can be done to make it fit without hacking up an otherwise straight tractor?

Big block shorts frames square hoods are :wicked: cool . My 1075 is my favorite  :wh: . I think it can be done , but I'm no expert . Try using ( big block short frame ) in the search box . I'm sure others will chime in . I also know that @squonk likes these too .

The Short answer is yes! (pun intended) You may need to find an engine base from a 10 HP K241 AS  - 46291A  used on the 1045 and 1055.

Lane Huls  One way to find out set  it in there then put the hood on and see where you are at. But I think the engine has to be completely assembled. To get a good idea. Good luck.

Sounds good. I'll look into that other engine base. I didn't pick it up since money's short til Friday, but it isn't going anywhere. I'll measure things out, see if anyone else has done it that I can imitate.

If I understand right, I'm looking for an "KxxAS" oil pan? I have a near blown k241as at home on a ford 100 clunker I pulled out of a hedge row. If that oil pan is the one I'm looking for, I'm nearly set!

Sorry to say that the big pan 12hp block will not bolt up a shallow pan without modification of either part unless you get a cub or JD block maybe. The 1045 motor does not have same ear tabs for mounting the pan to the block as the c series or the 1056 for example.

Lane, if it's truely a low hour turn key engine get it anyway. Something like that is always good to have around just in case......

No pictures of it yet. The engine is safely stored where I bought it. (Trusted friend) Until I can pick it up. Somehow I don't have pictures of the tractor yet either. I'll post them tonight.

I have just put K 301 on a short frame. I put a piece of angle iron on the left side of the frame This sets the engine to the left. Had to drill the frame for the right side engine bolts. I have a long flat nose hood, 67 or so that I had to make up a front mount for the bottom of the grill.  I also have a B 60 dash, gas tank mount and steering assy. This hood mates right up to this dash. The left side of the hood was tight to the engine shroud, I trimmed off about a half inch to clear the shroud. You may have to find and adapt for the length of the drive belt, I added an idler pulley on the bottom to take up slack. Making up anew belt guard. I also have  the tool box, fenders and seat off a 653 or such. This may give you some ideas.
