muz123 1,192 #1 Posted July 4, 2015 Need to replace my left rear seal on my 520-H. Finally got the hub off using a 7-ton puller but the key appears to be almost "welded" onto the axle. Any tricks to getting the key off? Thanks,Dave
AMC RULES 37,196 #2 Posted July 4, 2015 Think I've read... heating it up, then touching some candle wax to it... might do the trick/loosen it up. Have never tried this myself though.
muz123 1,192 #3 Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) Worth a try.. do I need to worry about the tranny oil getting too hot? . Edited July 4, 2015 by muz123
AMC RULES 37,196 #4 Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) I think you stand a higher risk of breaking your hub using the type of puller you have there. C-101plowerpower 1,606 #6 Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) a big hammer and some good heat should solve your problem, all kidding a side, might try one of these for getting the key out Edited July 4, 2015 by C-101plowerpower
Don1977 605 #7 Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) You can usually tap under the edge of the key. It might destroy the key, but the keys should be replaced after removing the hub anyway.New keys and new set-screws are insurance that you won't have loose hubs later. And anti-cease in case you ever have to remove the hub again. I did use a plate some years back with a similar setup.I did, hate to say, break a hub long ago using a 3-jaw puller. Ouch! While the hub is off, you might try a quick little change. 7/16-20 x 1-1/2" long bolts, 7/16-20 open ended acorn lug nuts. A little blue Threadlocker where the bolts sit in the hubs.

squonk 43,799 #10 Posted July 4, 2015 (edited) Here's my homemade puller. I had to pull a hub off of a 60's era trans about a month ago. I used my 1/2 " impact gun. Took over a half hr. to get that hub off but nothing broke. My hand hurt for a week after all that pounding though.http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/52038-my-new-super-whoopie-hub-puller/ Edited July 4, 2015 by squonk
muz123 1,192 #11 Posted July 4, 2015 Thanks for all the tips. The key looks almost welded on there. I'll try heat and a good hammer.
bmsgaffer 2,053 #12 Posted July 4, 2015 I would heat then use the wax like mentioned above, then give the key a nice hard tap right on one of the short ends. As its a half moon shape it should pop up on the other side... Hopefully
MalMac 1,332 #13 Posted July 4, 2015 Somebody with good video skills ought to make a couple how to tech videos. One being "Tip's for the removal of a stuck hub." The other would be a the famous "Stuck Steering wheel removal."
squonk 43,799 #14 Posted July 4, 2015 I should have took pics of the steering wheel removal on my 1267 I just did. Bearing separator plate gripping the metal hub of the wheel. Good size gear puller pulling on the plate. Very large Cresent wrench turning the puller. Roll pin would not come out. Sheared off the roll pin when pulling off.
