GT-14 not turning over

Recommended Posts

ericampagna

Please excuse me I am a newbie and my terminology my be incorrect but I hope to learn from everyone.  I'm a new owner of a 1972 GT-14. This is my first wheel horse and I am loving it. However I have had a few problems with it. The current problem is when I turn the key the engine won't turn. It seem that the starter is turning but not engaging the engine. I don't think the engine is seized because I can turn it manually. I was having an issue with the battery and when I tried to start it would just click once and not do anything. I replaced the battery and it started and ran several times. I even drove it around the yard a few times included 5 minutes before the issue began happening. Now it won't start. Please help. Thanks.

The starter generator has a bolt on a bracket that can be loosened, so that you can push the starter generator back which tightens the belt between the starter generator and the motor flywheel pulley.  your other battery may not have been getting a charge due to a loose belt also.
The GT-14 is one on my list of wants.  Good Luck

Hmmm my '70 GT14 does not have a starter generator (NOT belt driven). Starter engages via a gear to the flywheel... and charges via and internal alternator.... so me thinks you need to chk the wiring to the starter and verify after that if the starter is any good another area of course would be the starter solenoid... you could jump this and/or jump the starter directly via a jumper from the battery same with an external hot wire from the + battery to the alternator. Hope this helps

OOps .  there you go --Rgrottk says they have a starter alternator and not a starter generator, so my theory above is incorrect.  I guess I was thinking the GT -14 still had the belt driven starter generator.  Sorry!!

Pollack Pete

If the starter is spinning and not turning the engine........remove the starter and clean the bendix.40 some years of dried grease keeps things from working properly.I usually remove the starter and completely disassemble it to clean everything.I check the brushes and grease both bushings.Re assemble and it should be fine.

Yes rgrottk you are correct. After losing at it this morning I see it does not have a belt but a starter alternator and gears. When I turn the key the gear on the starter alternator turns but is not engaging the gear on the fly wheel. I am going to try taking off and cleaning it like pollack Pete has recommended.

Check all your connections, make sure the ground is grounded. Then check your battery for starters. Battery needs to have a good charge

So after getting the cover off it looks like the gear on the alternator has moved in towards the center of the engine.

It looks to me like starter is in need of rebuild or replacement. The gear when you initially crank it should extend and engage flywheel. Cost and effort of rebuild may be a wash with what you can replace it for. it should be K321 Kohler Starter........

But some of the more skilled members should confirm that for you....

Your starter Bendix is toast, you either need to rebuild this or replace the starter.... both are available on e-bay

      1994 520 H.   Starter just clicks.
      1. Battery 12.6V, load test OK.,    New solenoid. Ground good. Key switch tested ok. Wiring diagram shows a 'kill' relay - I can't find it on the tractor. Checked the 3 relays under the battery box - they work. Neutral switch, PTP and seat switch work mechanically.
      2. Not able to find article on this problem when searching. There must be dozens. How do I find them?
      3. Can I test the starter without taking it out?
      4. Is there a 'kill' relay?

      thank you...

I was thinking about putting this brush guard on my ‘69 GT-14. So much for thinking.. I don’t really care for it..
Original thought was it would look cool & help protect that exposed fuel tank.
.  Pretty sure I’m going to abort on this project.
      Back to the drawing board..
Yes, I know, wrong hood decals for ‘69..
This hood is off a ‘70 I had.

Please Help-- I inherited this work horse from my father in-law after being passed down from his father.  I recently brought my wheel horse in for repairs and the service shop said they were unable to find the part; starter/solenoid.  I did not want to give up on this beast as even the repair shop said this is a well made machine and is better than anything built today. I eventually found the part but because the shop left the part uninstalled I was unable to see how the starter was wired.  Yesterday,  I installed the new starter/solenoid but when I connected the battery terminals the tractor wanted to start on its own.  I quickly disconnected the terminals and analyzed the electrical schematic map but I am baffled on the proper wiring.  I only have a positive (red) battery terminal wire, another red wire, black (ground) wire, and a blue wire with a slot connection.  I included pictures of the starter and the electrical schematic map.  Any help would be much appreciated!! I l would like to fix this on my own as this seems to be a simple wiring issue.  I can add pictures of the tractor itself, but at the moment its under a tarp in a shed at night. Thank you in advance, Matt

Rebuilding a C160. everything worked prior to rebuild
Engine was fairly high time so machined .020 over and rebuilt
Finished rewiring and made sure all the circuits were in order
Starter would spin the engine. Made new coil wire and installed new spark plug
Starter won't turn the engine. Tried several times with and without spark plug Same results
Starter was what I took off the tractor prior to rebuild but can't say it is orininal
So.......Am I missing something or is a new starter going to be the answer?????
      Thoughts?  Ideas?
      All help/input appreciated
BTW:  Don't know if it means anything but the gear does not retract when key is moved back to ON
