I think that horizontal shaft is more reliable than vertical shaft. Got a couple old wheel horses my self and I find them to be the most reliable lawn tractors that I've ever owned

Guys I wanted to thank everyone for their input.  I've decided against the tractor that started this thread.  That's the bad news.  The good news is I've settled on a Wheel Horse of some type.  Trying to find a rig that will fit my budget and get the job done (with help from the full size tractor when needed).  Lots of good suggestions in this thread and elsewhere here.  

 

Once again, thanks for the help.  Hopefully I'll be posting back here in the not too distant future to show off my new tractor.  Thankfully looks like this latest storm will pass to the South of us.  That'll buy me a bit more time.

      I bought a 5xi package yesterday including some attachments I'm not going to need:
      4' plow, model # 79355 - in great condition, very minor surface rust on crossmember and back side of blade. $250 48" mower deck with blower and bagger - in good condition, working when removed from tractor yesterday. Previous owner said it never clogged on him. Some surface rust on deck and one 2" hole near the center. $300.  
      I'm open to offers and interested in trades! I'm looking for a 2-stage snow thrower, p/n 79366. Maybe tools, etc.

        I received it in non working order, I have since done the following repairs:   To Engine/Transmission; New carburetor, fuel pump, fuel line, fuel filter, battery, throttle cable, head bolts, spark plug, regapped points changed oil in engine and transmission and cleaned air filter.   To Body; striped and repainted wheels, blades sharpened and primed hood and rear fenders (ready to be painted).    This mower is ready to add to a collection or used for every day tasks.       John Deere LX-178 with snowblower

      JD LX-178 with Kawasaki 2 cyl water cooled engine.
      Great shape except for the front hood.  Cracks have been patched, and hinges on the hood itself are broken.  Hood sits fine, just does not open & close properly
      NO DECK!
      Includes (4) John Deere suitcase weights, a John Deere "maintenance kit", and rear chains.
       
      Well maintained.  Snow blower presently not mounted.
