Jeb's Suburban 400

Recommended Posts

Lately it seems as if the ADD has kicked in quite heavily. Have had a tough time keeping focused on the 416 after I screwed the clear up on the fender pan. Yesterday Jeb and I decided to tear into the 400 and find out why it was blowing oil out from under the tins and then it stopped running completely last year with no spark. Well I tore the head off and found the head gasket leaking like a sieve in one spot. It scoured the head a bit but nothing major. Decarboned the piston and put the head in a vice today and hit it with the file until it was smooth and flat again. Glass beaded it and reinstalled it back on the engine. Cylinder walls still have some checkering left and theres no ring worn at the top either which was surprising. Put her all back together and cleaned the points and filled it with gas and she fired up like a champ. No more smoke and runs smoother. Hers a vid of Jeb driving it after and a few pics after I cleaned it tonight. I bought this lil guy as part of a lot of 4 with a bunch of parts and such. I originally had the intention of doing a 100% rest on her but after tonight I think we're going go with that patina look to her. Jeb and I washed her wish some purple power and a red Scotch-brite then I hit her with some Meguire's #5 to add some essential oils back into the red.  I know it isn't supposed to have yellow wheels and I have been told that the seat cover I put on it has no place belonging on a Suburban but we like it. We did find it was orange at one time and the wheels are linen beige under the yellow but this is how she's gonna live for the future for now and he loves driving it. I put a belt guard on it that I got shafted on Ebay with. It was advertised as original and I was too naive to know it wasn't until I got it here. Such is life, I'm sure I will spend more than 50 bucks on something not real again before I retire from this hobby.

He is in love with it I can say that. Thankfully he's a big boy for 7 years old (4'8"and 98 pounds) and can get to the clutch relatively easily. It needs front tires really bad. I filled them up tonight after he left and the right tore in half basically with the tube sticking out like a big zit. Not sure what I'm gonna do now. I have 2 RJ's and a 551 to rob from so I may borrow a set of fronts for awhile til I get some moolah for new sneakers. Those B.F. Goodrich rear tires are darn near perfect so they're staying put. I see Tractor Supply by me has some Hi-Run 4.80-4x8 for $37 a piece and it looks like the same tread pattern. Maybe tomorrow I'll run and check them out. I can reuse the tubes from these. Either way I'm going to take the mower deck off and let him run it that way for awhile. Maybe put one of the 3 plows I have together and get it on for the winter. I think I may get a carb kit and throw it in it too. Maybe it will help with its reliability. Thanks for all your comments guys. He likes his mini horse. I think I may find a weight for the front or maybe some wheel weights. I'm sure somebody must make something

Husband wants some advice… lol.  So we did an engine swap today on two suburbans because we could not get the one engine to spark all the time to get it running!  The engine ran last year before parking for the winter sleep…. Points were changed out for new the engine was cleaned to make good contact has new spark plug new coil condenser we even switched out the fly wheel today thinking maybe the magnet was weak…. Advice???   It would where are you out yanking on the recoil five or so times and maybe only get the points to fire twice if you’re lucky..  checked the gap and pull again… same thing over and over!  Thanks in advance!

Well my husband got new grownup toys!  Lol. Just wanted to post them on here to share!  Sure most seen for sale but they arrived yesterday at our back door glad we found them before it rained again!  Not sure why delivery person made the effort to go to the back of the house…. 🤔🤯

Let’s see all the RJ’s and suburbans that are in Europe / United Kingdom. Here’s my two RJ-58’s.

So I went to get a haircut this morning in the neighboring town of Kingsland.  Saw a few garage sale sign so I though I'd check them out.   The Garage Sales were a bust, but as I drove through the area, I spotted this 1960 Wheel Horse Suburban being used as a mail box post.    It was chained and locked to the T post and the front rims were sunk well into the dirt like it had been there quite a while.  I momentarily though about knockings on the door,  but the hood was cut, there was no motor and the transmission shifter rubber boot was long gone.  I say it's a 1960 as it had the treadplate foot rest.  It's probable best left for the yard art it's currently being used for.
