Kohler K 121 Motor - HELP

Recommended Posts

hcminis

Well, as most of you know by now I stole a Suburban a week or so back. The lil guy came with a Kohler K 121 motor. So far it will only run with some gas put directly in the carburetor. My plan is to rebuild the carburetor when the kit arrives.

Question is how rare is this motor. MikesRJ said that is was rare but so far I can't even find that is was made. Maybe I have the only one....haha. Local W. H. guys must have taken a grumpy pill today because they didn't have the time to mess with it. The local Kohler rep won't call me back.

Any help?

Thanks

I thought that Kohler shroud looked funny when you posted those pics the other day. I've never heard of a K-121 either... has to be somewhere around 5Hp would be my guess.

Email (don't call) Kohler support. In my personal experience I've found the computer help people are much handier with computerized information than the phone people. (same goes for Toro ! :D ) They will usually reply within 24 hours and can tell you more about your engine. Perhaps even cough up a manual for it in PDF form.

Jason, already sent that message to Kohler. Still nothing and it has been since last Thursday ( 5/13/10 ). Hope someone will see it soon. Not really a big deal but would like to know some background.

OH...sorry for posting in the wrong section. Thanks for the move.

From what I can learn about Kohler Engines they started making stand alone engines in 1948. Before that they made generators from 5 to 20 HP. The K-90 was first built in 1951. The K-160 in 1952 and in 1959 they came out with the K-141, K-161, K-181, and the K-241 all with the same mounting base dim. and the same crank height. I couldn't find anything about a K121 it could have been a generator engine. I did find a reference

to a K121 generator but could not find any more information on it.

Well, even Kohler can't find info on this motor. I did find out that the carburetor could be rebuilt if it has the threaded seat in the bowl. If it has the pressed then I'm screwed. Now I don't know what to do. The motor is rare so won't part with it but want this Suburban running BAD!!!! I want to drive it desperately. The good news thus far is the motor will run so hopefully this evening get the carburetor off and torn down. Put it in the cleaner can for about 20-30 minutes and put some new seals in with what I can and cross my fingers.

Really need the fitting for the gas line to the carburetor. This is a press in style and not threaded. Don't want the 90 degree but a straight on so if anyone has one or knows where to get a press-in fuel line fitting please let me know.

Thanks

A K121 was never used in a Wheel Horse as OEM equipment, to my knowledge.

@hcminis did however purchase a Wheel Horse that someone had installed a K121 engine on in a later repower application.

i.e. it was a bastardized situation.
