Ed Kennell 47,432 #1 Posted yesterday at 02:14 PM The 5 HP B&S on my Trac Vac was becoming hard starting and needing choke. So I started to remove the carb and found it was loose from the block which is probably the problem. The two bolts were loose about 3 turns. While I was in there, I decided to remove it and do a cleaning. I could use a manual and pictures of the throttle and governor linkage to help me do the reassembly. squonk 48,172 #3 Posted 23 hours ago This reminds me of the neighbor lady who borrowed my Tecky powered push mower years ago. She mowed part of her yard in the morning. After lunch she comes over and says it won't start, I go over and the carb is laying on the deck. I reinstall it and she mows some more. Next day she's back and ir won't start again. I go over and the carb is on. I pull the cord and the whole engine spins around! 3 bolts had fallen out. 1 4

The Horse is already out of the Barn, but... And THAT is exactly why we need to pull out the Cell Phone & click off a couple of pictures at different angles prior to disassembly. Priceless in that situation. Cell phone pix are better than the digital camera in that you can zoom up & around for fine detail.

I may have to pull the engine to reassemble the linkage from the bottom.

ri702bill 13,110 #9 Posted 20 hours ago (edited) The only B&S engines I have are the "Classic" 3-1/2 HP with the oldy-but-goodie PulseJet carb on top of the tank... and the plastic wind vane governor. Edited 20 hours ago by ri702bill

C-85 826 #11 Posted 20 hours ago I had the same issue of the carb bolts getting loose on the 5hp B&S on our wood splitter. This turned into more of a disaster, I tried taking off its muffler so I could have more access and both of them broke off. After I drilled out the broken off bolts and Helicoiled new threads, I used some Allen head bolts to remount the carb. I cut off an Allen wrench so it would reach the bolts. That allowed me to get those carb bolts very tight! Then I used a wire on the muffler bolts.
ri702bill 13,110 #12 Posted 20 hours ago Excellent safety wire job. Note that if either bolt loosens, it tightens the wire.
pfrederi 21,201 #13 Posted 19 hours ago The B&S single L head service manual has some diagrams. If you give me the engine Model and series I can look it up and scan the pages this evening 1

Ed Kennell 47,432 #16 Posted 15 hours ago (edited) Thanks Chuck, Paul, and Garry. She's starting with one pull and running with open choke. So the two loose carb bolts was the problem. Amazing it ran at all with a dangling carb. The qov. linkage wasn't much of a problem but I had a bit of a problem with the throttle linkage. Found this pic in the OM that showed the how the U shaped part connected the throttle to the qov. My linkage pic. The part that gave me trouble was on top and easily visible. A picture would have saved me some time. I searched thru over 50 pictures in the OM till I found the throttle configuration that showed the part in question. Seems Briggs used a different arrangement for every engine.

After I found the loose carb bolts, I knew that was the problem. I could have just retightened the bolts but they did not have lock washers so I wanted to remove the bolts and add lock washers. My bolts had both a hex head and a torx head so I was able to use a short torx bit with a box end wrench to tighten them. I see you have lock washers. Were they factory or did you add them? Too low on the labor - Minimum Wage is $17 or more - depends on locale. You forgot the "Service Call Charge" - $100 minimum. You DID have to leave the house to fix this, right?
