HorsinNC 3 #1 Posted Sunday at 12:31 PM So I've got a C101 with a 121 engine swap and I have this problem that's been getting worse and I can't figure it out. It doesn't really matter if the grass is tall or short, but after a while (sometime between 15 minutes and an hour) the engine will bog down to the point of barely running with the PTO engaged. If I take the PTO it will remain bogged down for about 10 seconds and resume normal running speed. I've gone through most what I could think of and I'm not sure what's going on. The blades are sharp, I've tried loosening and tightening the belt tension, pulleys are freshly greased, I've played with the tension on the PTO lever. It's got a new air filter, fuel pump, and spark plug. Oil and transaxle fluid are in good shape. The friction disk is getting a little low, but I still have about .025" until I'm at the rivets. When I first got it about 6 months ago it was running like a champ, now I get maybe 15-30 minutes of run time until the engine bogs down and I can't mow anymore. Sometimes if I let the tractor sit about an hour I can get another 5-10 minutes until the problem comes back. What do you folks think it could be?
c-series don 12,382 #2 Posted Sunday at 01:00 PM Sounds like the same thing that happened to @Dan 312-8. He had crap in the fuel tank that after driving around for a while would stick to the screen on the fuel tank valve. I believe that he ran the tank dry and then blew air back through the fuel line to clear the screen. Then when the tank was totally dry he vacuumed it out. He may chime in on this, but I’d give that a try. Either way it can’t hurt to clean the tank and screen. I’d also install a new fuel line, it could slowly be collapsing and squeezing the fuel volume.

It's got new fuel lines when I installed a new fuel pump and filter. Why would that only affect the engine while the PTO is running and resume normal operation when it's pulled off? I'll take another look, but I don't think the tank has a screen. It just goes straight to the petcock and down into the new fuel filter and pump Edited Sunday at 01:39 PM by HorsinNC

A fuel restriction may only show up under max load.

peter lena 10,029 #9 Posted Sunday at 01:58 PM @ Horsin NC , ever check out the hand moved pto to mule belt movement ease ? regularly see and hear , screaming clutch disc engagement , on mowers ? would bet there are a number of failed bearings involved , there are 12 involved , frayed related belts tell the story , cracked , spilt , from bad bearings . pete

Well @c-series donwas close. I did remove the tank, drained it, blew it out with compressed air and then I set my air compressor regulator to about 5#, and let the air tank deplete while running air into the gas tank, the I baked it in the summer sun for hours, blew it out again and then replaced the grommet and shutoff valve, replaced the fuel line to the filter and the filter. Has been running like a top ever since. 5

I haven't replaced the petcock yet, maybe I could try that, but the grommet fuel line, glass bowl fuel filter, and fuel pump are all new on mine

It's got a little fray from when a stick caught it. I haven't replaced the bearings yet, but I did regrease the ones in the PTO bell a week ago trying to solve the issue Edited Sunday at 02:23 PM by HorsinNC 1
Ed Kennell 47,105 #14 Posted Sunday at 05:16 PM Just remove the fuel line at the petcock. You should see a full 1/4" diameter stream of fuel. I've bought some non running tractors for cheap that had petcocks completely blocked. They had new carbs, fuel pumps, fuel lines, and filters, but the fuel was never leaving the tank. 2 1

B-80 I just picked up for $50 the petcock was crammed, filter on petcock was bent over and broken, and the rubber grommet disintegrated when I removed it... Repeated tank cleaning, pressure air cleanouts, all new parts and petcock with no filter. I use in line filters that I can see... 2
peter lena 10,029 #17 Posted Sunday at 08:01 PM @Ed Kennell like a dielectric grease , on that petcock / hose / grommet set up . makes it much easier to install, great spot to experiment with a fuel filter , as well as just before carb , since adding stabil to all my fuels , there has been no fuel hose break down , 1 / 2 oz to tank top off , another problem elimination spot gone . pete

953 nut 68,774 #19 Posted Sunday at 11:10 PM May want to treat it to a couple of double strength doses of Berrymans B12 gas treatment. It may dislodge some little power robbers hiding out in the carburetor .
peter lena 10,029 #20 Posted Sunday at 11:40 PM @953 nut been using stabil for years , another thing I did , was set it up for a fresh start test ? cleaned out my tank , new fuel valve , fuel filter all new hoses , also added a fuel check valve , filter and clear fuel rated hose up to carb ? so I can see the clean fuel to carb , years in , guess what ? never had another fuel rated issue . at tank top off , always add an ounce or two , stabil . once verified did the same set up on my other 2 horses , no issues at all . love eliminating a repetitive problem , fuel filters are always , clean and clear thats a regular for me , pete
953 nut 68,774 #21 Posted Monday at 12:19 AM I am a firm believer in Stabil the Berrymans B12 is more or less a laxitive for the carburetor to clean out small deposits.
8ntruck 9,245 #22 Posted Monday at 01:42 AM I'm assuming that you have confirmed that all of the deck spindles spin freely, the belt tensioning pulley on the deck spins freely, and that the 2 pulleys in the mule drive are free running. If not, you should check, just to be sure.
peter lena 10,029 #23 Posted Monday at 11:58 AM @8ntruckTHANK YOU ! you are the first to say what I have been suggesting for years ! its not ONE PROBLEM , ITS ALL RELATED ROTATIONAL MOVEMENT POINTS ! most of my bearings are 6203 type , WIDE SIDE GREASE SHIELDS ? how could you possibly ENHANCE THOSE ? small flat pocket screwdriver , small putty knife , easily removed , wipe out , carb cleaner flush , LUCAS X TRA HD GREEN CHASSIS GREASE , 550 flash point , polyurea rated , walmart $ 8 , every one of my related bearings has this , never burned out a clutch disc , my mule drive to deck belt moves with ease , BTW that pto set up is a GOLD MINE FOR ENHANCEMENT ! did this years ago , give me a shout , pete
Rick3478 465 #24 Posted 7 hours ago Does that have the rubber isolated engine "wobble plate" mount? If the cushions are original, the rubber may be getting bad. I had trouble with a C-125, and that was over ten years ago. If the engine vibrates too freely, it can cause the float to bounce around so much that the carburetor bowl floods. At least that's what I convinced myself was going on. The replacement cushions were stiffer and seemed to cure the problem. They were still available, though pricey, back then. Don't know about now. No guarantees, just something that fell out of the cobwebs of memory.
