Raider 12 or C-100...Whats the difference?

Recommended Posts

Looking at buying a Raider 12 or C-100. Is one better than the other? Aside from engine size, what are the differences? Thanks.

What year is the Raider 12? Are they both automatic or manual?

A C-100 is an 8 speed with a 10 horse power motor. It has an 8 pinion open differential in it and the attach a matic style hitch and mule drive. A Raider 12 is a 6 speed with a 10 pinion limited slip differential if original. It has a 12 horse power motor and the earlier style mule drive and mid hitch. As far as better than one or the other, that all depends on what you are doing. Essentially the 8 speed and 6 speed are the same transmission,, just different names and differentials. They both still has 6 forward speeds and 2 reverse speeds. Edit: If the C-100 is an automatic which I was not thinking about until @ebinmaine posted about it, it would have a hydrostatic transmission instead of the 8 speed

Raider 12 is a 6 speed

That's only true from 1968 through 1969.

1970, 1971 and 72 they had an 8-speed.

1970 and 71 should have limited slip differential. 1972 might not.

It seems like semantics and minutia but they are different and it should be acknowledged for the sake of clarity and the possibilities of ordering parts in the future.

I thought they had the limited slip until 73 when they went to the no names

I’ll chip in that the difference between 10 and 12 horsepower matters only if your use case regularly needs maximum power.

Also, don’t overvalue the Limited Slip Differential. Its performance is almost indiscernible from an 8-pinion open diff in most regular usage.

72 could go either way

I think snow plowing is going to be the biggest difference there. Also if someone was to attempt mowing going slightly uphill on wet grass? We don't do that here so I don't know but that's another possible scenario I could think of.

I have the 6 speed in my 854 so I have the limited slip in it and I'm not too hard on it so I'm not worried about it breaking yet, I mainly just drive around, mow, tow trailers, occasional dirt plowing and discing, and then the limited slip and 8 horse engine was a beast for plowing snow last winter, I rarely spun, and I usually ran out of traction before running out of engine.

I know the 10 pinion limited rears don't get much love, but the one on my 857 works great and I can tell a big difference in traction especially in snow or garden or pulling brush up hill etc. I said all that to say I wouldnt let one or the other sway me in my decision making. The later mule drives and hitchs are leaps and bounds better than the others IMO. :twocents-02cents:

The major difference I would be concerned about is the different deck drive systems.   That Raider 12s  obsolete side drive vs the C-100s current front mule drive.

Not putting down the LSD--I went out of my way to get one!

Only suggesting one not have “Posi-Traction” expectations. LSD helps for sure, but to me, running chains and keeping weight on the wheels does more to limit slip. 😉

loaded tires and chains with the LSD is the ultimate in traction in my opinion. Far as being tough probably can't beat the 8-pinion open diff. though.

The more modern Tachmatic on the C series is a better setup and opens door for more attachments.

My cheap-o walmart U1 battery is starting to bite the dust again (barely able to crank it over fully charged, and ozzing everywhere) after 3 years on my 68' Raider and I am looking into a new battery for winter as I now have a plow setup. I was thinking of either getting the original 22NF battery that came with it or running a mazda mita battery which is a U1 size. Is the AGM worth the extra money over the 22nF even in the smaller size? I think the vibrations keep killing the cheapo batteries and I am trying to make sure I can leave it out in the cold and not have a problem starting in the winter. It does get down to 0F or below zero every once in a while. I don't think I want to go all the way to a 22nF AGM as it is $200.

      Thoughts?

Hello, I was sondering if anyone knows if it is posible to mount some solid rear tires on my raider 12? I use it like a work horse(pun intended) and im constantly running over nails and screws and getting flats, The worst part is that the tires are not tubless so it is a pain to get a new Tube and fix it(because delivery takes a couple of days if not even weeks) so i could use some solid tires but id prefer to keep the original rims. So if anybody knows if it is possible please leave a comment!.
