Retired Wrencher 6,765 #1 Posted April 30 Ok just asking if this can be done. I know where a K301 12 hp. But it is gear start. Can this be converted to a start /gen set up? Any thoughts are welcome.
squonk 47,234 #2 Posted April 30 Yes. If you want the complete Start /Gen look you will have to either remove the ring gear from the flywheel or get the correct flywheel to use the non hump shroud. Same thing with the small blocks. This 875 has an engine from a B 80 2
leabassett@sbcglobal.net 172 #3 Posted April 30 If you have old engine just use the parts off it to convert over. You may need the oil pan from it also.

If you have or can find a K301 that has all The S/G parts and pieces already in place that would be your best bet. If you go the full S/G route you may need to do a bit of rewiring but we can help you get it done. 2
ri702bill 12,378 #5 Posted April 30 You will need a big block style S/G .... for a couple of reasons. Brackets for the correct fitment and you need the longer body S/G. The shorter one from a K161 7HP may not have enough "cookies" (oomph??) to get the job done. A couple more to consider.... that is a lot of motor to spin over - it may struggle. Also, the S/G setup is only 3 Amps.....

I do not care about if the charge or not I have battery maintainers to do this, 2 hours ago, 953 nut said: Anything your pockets are deep enough to finance CAN be done, and we are here to help you spend your money! So that is why I asked if it is possible to do this.

squonk 47,234 #11 Posted April 30 The starter and genny brackets bolt to the same 2 holes. I don't think there will be room for both, Never mind the electrical nightmare. The 8 HP genny and big block gennies are the same size. Only that 161 gennie is short.
pfrederi 20,819 #12 Posted April 30 You can use some spacers to get between a long and short generator body

I don’t need both just need to swap it just a generator if possible.
Sparky-(Admin) 25,825 #15 Posted May 1 Just to clear up the confusion in this thread. He has a 1057 with a Kohler 10 start gen that he feels the motor is “all-done”. The Kohler 12 he is considering is gear start and he wants to eliminate that and swap over all the start gen components from his 10 to the 12.

Your belt guard, S / G and the bracket it mounts on will be a direct swap as will the flywheel cover but I don't think the flywheel from a k-241 will be compatible with the K-301 crank shaft due to balancing differances. Perhaps @gwest_ca or @richmondred01 can confirm this one way or the other.
richmondred01 2,383 #18 Posted May 2 (edited) The k241 has a different stroke then the k301. Therefore, the cranks are different and can’t be swapped. Additionally, the flywheel for the starter generator is not set up for a stator and the bearing plates are also different because of the mounting of the stator. The only option is the measure both flywheels and take the ring gear off the one flywheel when it’s cherry red. Once it’s off, heat the ring gear cherry red and drop in on the other flywheel and let cool. Edited May 2 by richmondred01
squonk 47,234 #19 Posted May 2 (edited) Just remove the ring gear from the 301 flywheel. I've done 2 of them. Easy Peasy. You can slice the ring gear off with a cutting wheel. Edited May 2 by squonk
