Modern appliances??

Recommended Posts

Trina is looking for a refrigerator.

Full-sized but smaller cubic foot.

Decent quality.

I don't know what features she wants, if any.

What brand names should she focus on, or avoid?

LG is out.

Seems like they are good overall until they need a compressor or other major parts.

Remember the days long ago and far away when we used to try to fix our stuff? Apparently LG has forgotten those days existed......

I think they all have that attitude these days.  These days if it is a compressor failure it is better to eat the loss and get a new one. I do not eleven know if individuls can even buy the refrigerant anymore.

Service companies can. That's the problem with the LG label. The service technicians around Northern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire have even stopped working on them....

@pfrederi  Do you have a water hammer arrestor 1/4'' compression  coming from your cold water source to the inlet of the ice Maker by chance ? That you could add. I am assuming your water line is copper not plastic from source ? Back of fridge is usually plastic tubing nowadays.

All are pretty much junk. Avoid anything fancy.

We had a prehistoric Hotpoint that was as big as a small pick up. Worked great but with our energy audit they gave us a plain as can be LG. Going on 6 years. I had to build a platform for it to raise it up because unless you were 3 feet tall you couldn't see inside! :angry-jumpinganger:

And don't place a magnet on the outside near the magnetic light switch! :eusa-doh::lol:

Nobody works on any of them. After the warranty is over 90% of the time it's cheaper to replace it. A service call to diagnose. Then order the part ( 2 weeks or more) :angry-tappingfoot: Then another service call to install the $300 part. Then another service call to reconnect the plug that fell apart 2 days after the 2nd service call.

Walked into Lowe's 6 years ago, salesman asks my wife what she's looking for in a fridge. Mrs. Sylvan says: "no ice machine, no fancy knobs, no WiFi connection, or other crap. I don't want to text with my fridge...Just a fridge and freezer. Show me the brushed silver ones that have no extras."

Salesman looks at me, pats my shoulder and says "you are one lucky man..." Yes I am!!! Says I...

Not one issue on a basic Frigidaire...

I have North of 2500 in a Samsung. (aka samsuck)

made Ice for one year just after warranty stopped working, find out they have tons of issues. I have defrost the ice maker once a month to have ice.

5.6K members on facebook with same issue. https://www.facebook.com/groups/280704063879207

A lot of people said not to let them work on the ice maker because the fix causes other issue.

I do like an ice maker but the next one is going to be pretty plain.

This guy has some good ideas

I have a magic chef brand in the garage.  It is great.  That said its old so:eusa-think: idk.  Smaller version with the freezer in the same door.  That setup ruins frozen food.  Fine for rocks for the slow down liquids.

I have a Mohamed Ward freezer I bought in 1981 when we go Married. Basic freezer no defrost  45 years old and still runs great.
I had an LG refg. Tech came out to work on and couldn’t find electrical schematic online for it. Said he return with info but never heard from him again. My 3 sons and I all have Samsung 5-10 years old. So far so good 😊

Ice makers in your average Fridge are a waste. They aren't really designed to work worth a hill of beans. Never saw one that lasted a couple years. If you like ice and have the room, an under counter ice maker isn't bad. At least it's designed to make ice and it's all it does.

Our Lowes used to have this old lady in the appliance dept. She used to own an appliance store. She would steer customers away from the junk and direct them to the units that were somewhat dependable. We bought a dishwasher and washing machine from her with excellent results.

Our kids don't seem to get more than two or three years out of a refrigerator.  One of them had some kind of electrical issue--it seemed the interior light went out and it was somehow interconnected to  the electronics and it was replaced under warranty,   I've wondered if they have power grid electrical fluctuations.   The salesman recommended that they purchase as simple of refrigerator as possible and purchase a service contract then when the unit fails get a replacement.  They are not designed to last.

I have replaced the drum rollers on their dryer three times.  Even today, my wife brought their laundry to our house because their washing machine won't start.  We'll probably look into that this weekend.

I don't like shopping for vehicles and appliances.  It's always a  crapshoot for me.

We went the service contract route once, the manufacturers know how long their units will last and won't offer a service contract that they have a likelihood of having to honor. You are better off putting the money in the bank in my opinion

We have had a side by side LG for six years, has an ice maker that works great but no ice/water through the door. It has the  door in the door of the refrigerator side which is the most convenient feature I have ever had.

If it goes out we will shop for whatever the dealers have kin stock and can deliver the soonest. Like @squonk pointed out, they are all throwaways, no one has parts for anything and the service calls are outrageous.

About twenty years ago we had a GE that went out less than a year after we bought it, the service man said parts were unavailable and had GE authorize a full refund, only catch was we had to buy another GE and the one that went bad had been on sale so we ended up spending more for the replacement.

Buy what ever brand you wish, estimate out how much a replacement will cost 5yrs from now, start putting money away each month so that you are ready to buy another new one in 5yrs. This is how you figure in the 5yr life expectancy of new appliances. :twocents-twocents:

Buy 2 or 3 large YETI 's and  stack them in the kitchen with BLOCK ice. Problem solved. Cut's down on the CMP bill as well.
