Camshaft .005 shim

Good morning,  working on a k181 .

My question is what material should 

I want to buy from mcmaster carr,  the stock shim is 15/32 x 3/4 x .005. Closest I can find is 1/2 x 3/4 x .005. Think that would work? If so , 18-8 stainless , carbon steel or spring steel . I can get 10 shims for less than 1 kohler shim.

Where are you going to be putting the shim? I’m not sure where you are referring to.

If you are adding the .005" shim to an existing shim, it might be better to use one shim that equals the stack you need, or two shims that are thicker than the .005".  I would use the spring steel.

the extra 1/32 inch OD should not cause any issues in that location.

@pfrederi@lynnmor  What do you think of  this one, maybe I'll get .005 and .010 to have on hand . Can get 25 for $10.  Kohler shim 8 bucks a pop + shipping.

The next question is, how much clearance is there should be between these two and how much is there between these two?

@Chaz54 spec is .005 - .010.

There is about. 014 clearance now, with one .005 shim.

I too am in favor of using one thicker steel shim to give you about .007 or so clearance.

It sounds like you have .019" play without shims, a pair of .006" would give you .007" clearance or use just one .012"  or .0125"  would give the same and you wouldn't have the thin metal.

@lynnmor  just went and remeasure the camshaft end play with out the shim, measured .016  so a .010 shim should do the trick.  Well I have to get a shim now,  I buggerd up the .005 shim.

Ok just ordered .005 and .010 shims, will be here Tuesday.  Thay will have to come by dog sled. Were supposed to get between 12 to 18 inches even up to 2 foot, depending on who talk to.

Still waiting for the shims, but look what I found.  The cam lobe for the points has a dig in it. What do you think about sanding, or filling the dig out.

If that is where the pin for the points ride you will never get the timing right.  Is that the high point of the lobe?

@lynnmor it' is over the high point of the lobe. Took some pic's, the blue dots is the length of the dig.

Looks like I'm looking for another cam.
