markseven 83 #1 Posted Saturday at 04:50 PM Just did an engine overhaul and runs great but the hood rattles a lot any way to make this quite.
Bar Nuthin 1,974 #2 Posted Saturday at 05:13 PM I just left my neighbor's place, and he showed me how he added some cheap wire loom to the edge of his dash tower where the hood rests. Says it cured his rattling hood woes. 2

Works like a charm. Of course, thin strip of black gorilla tape or duct tape would also work... even cheaper...

Used this on my tractors with a top mounted hood latch. Works very well, and is surprisingly durable. One other point- The front hood pivot can be a huge noise generator. Often times the hood pivot holes wallow out and create a great deal of rattling noise. Newer classic machines used plastic bushings that were rarely replaced over the years. Small bronze bushings work well. I also tend to remove pins and such in favor of bolts and nylock nuts in addition to some form of pivot bushing. Racinbob 12,493 #11 Posted 18 hours ago Look carefully and you'll see the flanged bushings in the pivot pin. That helped a bunch. To finish the cure for this area I added a couple of rubber grommets to prevent metal to metal contact. Note the wear that's caused on this 50 year old machine. You can get the little bumpers that push in but I went with a part that's available pretty much anywhere. 2
peter lena 9,623 #12 Posted 15 hours ago @Racinbob have to tell you , thats a , you can't do that move ! only kidding , regularly adapt to any situation , saw that trim at wally world , immediately thought of a spot to protect , love working on a consistent problem , but not for long , pete
c-series don 10,904 #13 Posted 15 hours ago On Black Hoods I used magnetic tape where the hood meets the dashboard. I got it at one of the box stores, it’s about 1/2” wide and maybe an 1/8” thick. I stuck it to the dash tower, it fits perfectly in that notch where the hood lands. Looks factory and helps hold the hood closed a little bit. 3
Dan 312-8 357 #14 Posted 15 hours ago On my ‘96 312-8 (pictured), and on other tractors I use a piece of clear tubing for the hood to steering tower, and as @kpinnc said, look at the nylon bushings at the hood pivot point. Those are fun to replace when working alone.
markseven 83 #15 Posted 11 hours ago Those little brass bushings are completely gone on mine. 3/8 × 1/2 od. ? Flanged bushing times two.

This is what is called for on my ‘96 312-8. Would agree, brass or bronze material would be the ticket. I definitely miss working in a machine shop.

Very easy to drill out to the 1/2" and a simple install. 2 hours ago, Dan 312-8 said: They are nylon, see attached. Th is what is called for on my ‘96 312-8. You can get a handful of the brass for that.
