Gt14 transmission issue

Recommended Posts

Gettysburg Axel

Good afternoon I have an issue with a gt14 I’m currently building. I’m in the process of installing a 18 HP Briggs opposed twin into a gt14 I recently picked up. The previous owner told me the transmission worked good the only issue was the engine supposedly through a rod so he pulled it. Once I got it home I hooked up a predator engine to test the transmission and the only thing that would work was the lift arm. I have no forward or reverse. I don’t know if there could just be some gunk in the system blocking up somthing but any advice is very appreciated. I would like to continue with this project but I am currently stumped on the transmission. Thank you in advance for any help. IMG_3470.jpeg.e14758337583e402934598bc0a64de33.jpeg

check the tow valve on the top of the transmission. If lift works, then charge pump is working, it is likely that the valve is open....  good luck!

The Tow Valve is probably open which allows you to push or pull the tractor around. Once it is closed the transmission will  :handgestures-fingerscrossed: probably operate well. It is not easy to get to but the attached thread should be helpful.

Thank you for the advice on the tow valve I did change the direction it was facing and still wasn’t moving. It did feel like it could go further. Should the valve stop turning when it is closed?

NO the valve is a port valve turn it 180 degress.  Handle should face front to back if it does not roll turn it another 180

So with some messing around I kept turning the valve until it moved. The current position is the only spot it will move. It’s about a 1/6th or so past where it should be.

it should in theory drive at 12 and 6 o clock, roll freely and 9 and 3, and perhaps bypass and leak a bit anywhere in between!

Could be in need of a bit of cleaning and new "O" Ring. The tow valve is not well sealed from the elements and can be a bit rusty. This photo is from the other post I attached earlier.

So I got the tractor running and driving. On flat surfaces it move around fine. Going up hills it slows to a crawl at full throttle and the direction lever full forward. I did pull the tow valve apart and it looks to be in good shape. I did put a new filter and did an oil change. The oil that came out didn’t show signs of any catastrophic failure (no metal), just looked like it was burnt.

Couple of possibilities come to mind. The acieration valve springs take a pounding and probably are contributing to this problem. The manual shows where they are located and Lowell @wheelhorseman has them in stock, link attached.  The other prospect is the pump and slippers needing a little TLC, @daveoman1966 did a great tutorial on this.

Thank you for the advice I rather get this transmission fixed up instead of replacing it.

Changing for a 30wt to 40 wt oil may help.
