Just posted on your want ad about welding. Now looking at this I think that could be welded or brazed by someone proficient in such skills.

If you have the missing piece that is.

Yes, I intend to try to save this one. The local machine shop can’t guarantee it will hold, so I’ll search for someone that can bake it and weld it.

On the other note, I found some of the gearsets are different. I need to read through stevasarus sticky some more. I’m sure it’s been covered. But this is what I’ve found.

My splines are square. (Top set in picture). Others are round spline.

Also I think I can cut this shaft down? It appears to be too long.

Don't know too many people that would.

Don't be afraid to use your shout out to @stevasaurus or @Lane Ranger or @Racinbob. They have been in these trannys more than anyone we know here.

I would think you could cut that shaft down but be careful ... measure ten times cut once.

I intend to. I’m getting used to navigating the site. It’s different in the phone than it is the desktop.

I’m wondering if that whole bottom row of gears is just very worn.

The inner teeth on that far right lower gear also look worn, or maybe it’s the picture.. Those inner teeth mesh with the input gear and are crucial to driving the whole transmission.

@stevasaurus Any thoughts!

I would say that both of those 3523 gears are history. I would check the teeth on the input shaft/gear as well. It's likely pretty worn.

What’s weird is those bottom gears are the ones I was going to use as the teeth are no where near as pitted. Also they will slide onto other shafts with ease. Just not the square teeth shaft that was in my transmission.

I ran into that gear thing in that long thread you've been reading.  The difference is the one set is from a #5003 and the other is from a #5010 (60/61 suburban).  They are interchangeable from the 5010 into the 5003 as long as you use the input shaft that fits the inside of those gears.  All 3 gears have to fit...the 2 fork gears and the little pinion gear.  If you count the teeth...there are 10 or 11 in the gears.

That cluster gear shaft that is long, could be from a #5085 4 speed transmission.  The brake drum would mount on the end out side the trans.  You can cut it to length, but notice where the woodruff keys go for that pinion and the reduction gear on each end.  Cut to length the end that woulld stick outside the trans.  If you can measure the old cluster gear shaft length, that is what you want.  :USA:

I bought an old RJ transmission at the Big Wheel Horse Show in Gettysburg last year.

I bought it as the shifter worked well on all different modes, the axles, brake and drive shaft pulley all turned and I knew this could be saves.

Tore into in on Sunday June 1st for the first time.    Drained  the gear oil and a little bit of water came out too but the cream colored -still very black,

First thing I came across was that the brake gear did not make a complete  360 degree turn.

Curious so I took off the cluck rod, brake pad and drum and then the brake side panel.

Noticed a very black layer of greasy sludge on the bottom of the transmission that will take a few cleaning steps.   I did run gasoline in the transmission case before draining!

I took out cluster gear first and noticed the brake gear still did not turn 360 degrees.

I then proceeded to take out the spline gear and shift gears.

This transmission is dated July 16, 1959 on the case code number.

When you see the brake gear it has 8 teeth -that s the original 5003 RJ transmission brake gear before they bettered it with the 11 tooth brake gear,

So a July 1959 transmission should have had a 11 tooth brake gear,   This transmission was reworked.

What I found when the spline gear was removed. (all but the Input Gear). is it was an 11 Spline Gear =Not a ten that would have been in the original 8 tooth brake gear set up!

So I called Steve Hilleshiem and duscussed this combo.  Steve had two RJ and two Suburban transmission of mine several years ago when he did the  "So You want to Redo a Three Speed Transmission". tutorial videos that is on Red Square!

Will the 11 Spline  gear set work with the 8 older 8 tooth Brake Gear and matched differential -instead of the original 10 spline gear set?

Will the inout gear work with both the 11 and 10 spine gear sets and the 8 /33 tooth early RJ Brake Gear?

The answer appears to be YES .  but I will be doing some additional investigation as I have not yet pinpointed exactly why my Brake Gear would not complete a complete 360 degree turn!

Some addiotnal information:

The outer teeth on the 11 Spine third shift gear has 23 Teeth.

Also oiled up the RJ lug nuts!

The old  black fluid grease in this transmission could make some good  STOVE BLACK!

Ok. I may have pinpointed the problem with the 8 tooth early brake gear turning  360 degrees!

Steveasaurus and I discussed this problem this morning.

He suggested that one way I could check what might be holding up the 8 tooth  RJ Brake Gear from fully turning would be to place the brake gear in with differential and add the cluster gear.

I did this and this was after I took a Dremel to the Brake Gear and cleaned each tooth race of debris, gunk and rust.   A few teeth did have a little bit of rust .

Well it turned out that even though the Brake Gear did turn 360 degrees it kind of. slowed where I placed the red paint on the two brake gear teeth.   So I will be looking at the Brake Gear closer and cleaning the teeth more.

The cluster gear did not seem to have any problems and in fact was in very good condition.

Excellent Lane !!  It was great talking with you today.  I see I did talk about those different spline shafts and all three gears to make an interchangeable set up.  :USA:
