What's the definitive way to tell if a KT17 is a Series 1 or Series 2 engine?

The Series 1 did not have an oil filter.

Also by serial number but tins can be switched.

@ebinmaine, Eric, the spec numbers for series 1 is 24299 and lower and series 2 is 24300 and higher. If you go to the manuals section under engines, there is a KT17 & KT19 service manual available. The descriptions part of that file has a nice breakdown of the years and Wheel Horse models that those engines were used in.      -JD-

I believe I have a series 2 without a filter also.

@midpack@ebinmaine I stand corrected.  Looking at the service manual it says "some engines are equipped with an oil filter"

I'm curious, does your engines have a blanked off place to add an oil filter?

@OldWorkHorse is there a blank on that one?

I'm thinking that a series 1 does not have provisions for an oil filter, and the series 2 does have oil filter provisions.

Curious if the KT 17 series 1 had the same oiling issues that the KT 19 series 1 did.

My series 2 has a block off plate. I even found a mounting plate but I haven't put it on. A remote filter would be the way to go

i have found the Series 1 or 2 engine model indication on the tins and the air cleaner to be unreliable since so many have been changed over the years

Bill it appears from my reading and asking questions that the earlier Series 2 engines did NOT have the oil filter boss.

We have a pair of 1986 417As that we have no reason to believe have been modified and neither one has the boss to add an oil filter.

I have a c175 from 83 that's series 1 and a 84 c175 with series 2...it's certainly challenging to confirm various models with certainty??

Agreed. Especially in your case where that's right near the year split.
