Spark plug cable replacement

Recommended Posts

JRess

I have a 12hp Koehler 301.  The spark plug cable boot is worn. I have a new cable. How do I replace into the ignition coil?  Since I am not too mechanical inclined don’t want to break anything.   Thanks all.

WHX??

Just pull the old one straight out. There should be a metal looking ferrule on the end of the old one and the replacement should have one like it on it. Just push it in. You should feel a slight click when it connects.

Forgot to add look down into the coil socket with a flashlight and check for any corrosion in ther. Clean as required.

You can see what the wire end looks like 2nd wire from the left.

Greasy Pete @peter lena might suggest some dielectric grease on it?

@JRess would use just a very light dielectric grease swipe , inside the plug boot , insure conductivity and eliminates boot tearing , do that on all my small engines . pete

Make sure the old wire end actually comes out.  Been there, done that.

Where did you get those at?

I was just getting ready to complain about the price of a single wire and was looking at some for marine engines as a possible way to buy 6 at a time.

I am guessing that is what you did, I just want to confirm they work. Thanks!!

He buys begs borrows & steals the pieces from NAPA and has the handy dandy crimper @RandyLittrell.

I got one from him at the BS and they are nice but me thinks Ole Sqounky bent me... :ychain:

@Achto and I since buy plug wire sets at Fleet Farm. Supposed to be for a Continental Dan??

Enough wire and ends to make a few.

I hit you over the head with a shovel. :)

The " universal tractor wire sets come with the boots and terminals on one end. You cut to length and put the ends on the other. Old # was Belden 700172. Sold a bunch of them. The problem with the kit is the plug terminals and boots are straight not a 90 deg elbow. That's why I buy everything separate so they have the right end. I'll have to check out Tractor supply. Looks like they sell a kit with the right boots..

These are the ones that we buy, they come with a 90 degree boot on the plug end. They sell 4cyl kit and a 6cyl kit.

TSC has a similar kit, they are a little more proud of theirs.

I saw those when I googled fleet farm. What material are the plug boots made from? I'd like to see an up close picture of them. The boots I use are 80% of the cost of the wire I make. Wouldn't mind a cheaper alternative if I could find one.

Not sure if they are rubber, neoprene or silicone. I do know that the wires are neoprene with a copper core. This site has a bit more info on the Calco wire sets.

Do the wires say High temperature? Can't make out what it says on the wire . Also don't like the style of the coil terminals. I use these. Crimp on:

Spark Plug Wire Terminal - Distributor

Plug wire terminal:

Spark Plug Wire Terminal - Snap Lock

Plug boot. High heat silicone:

Spark Plug Boot
