johnnymag3 2,567 #1 Posted March 30, 2023 (edited) Unsure if this topic has been covered once or 30 times what are you guys using for tachometers and I’m thinking single cylinder K and magnum engines. Also, twin cylinder M series engines. Thank you in advance. Edited March 30, 2023 by johnnymag3

johnnymag3 2,567 #4 Posted March 31, 2023 Im looking to use the style with the wrap on the Plug wire for the magnum....and a hard wire type to the coil on K engines Has anyone had any experience with any of these? Also I am looking to keep Hours, and Maintenance intervals on each machine.
Cee245 826 #5 Posted March 31, 2023 (edited) Hey Johnny, I purchased this one and it's worked well so far. Cheap too. You can use it for single and twin cylinders. Instructions included. Not sure how accurate it is, but it reads 3570 or so at WOT. Has maintenance reminders too. One thing, I have to turn it off when done or it'll drain the battery faster. OoPEZoO 566 #6 Posted April 1, 2023 (edited) I use an app on my phone called video tachometer. It uses the flash and camera while adjusting the frame rate/strobe speed. You adjust the settings until you see the flywheel stop spinning on the screen…..look at the screen, and it tells you the RPM. It works great and was a free download from the App Store, but honestly, it works so well, I wouldn’t have minded paying a few $$$ for it. I guess that’s not technically “on board”, but works great for carb tuning Edited April 1, 2023 by OoPEZoO
pacer 3,177 #7 Posted April 1, 2023 Hadnt heard of the one mentioned by @Cee245 so went over to the jungle and ckd it out -- pretty impressive, specially for the cost, has pretty good ratings too. There are some variations in styles/appearance also.
oliver2-44 10,691 #8 Posted April 2, 2023 @Cee245 I had a similar Tiny Tach. It worked good and Leroy hours etc. But when you replaced its little battery you lost everything. Any idea if that one saves the data when you change battery. @pacer
Cee245 826 #9 Posted April 2, 2023 @oliver2-44 I'm pretty sure it's the same with this one in losing data when battery runs out. I currently have it on my 314-8 and had it on my 416H. So I can confirm it works on a single Kohler magnum and the twin Onan. Don't quote me, but I thought I'd be able to use it for something like 5-10 years when I bought it. I have to turn it off after using it, so that's a drawback. On the 314-8, I bought it with "58" hours on the non-working meter. It definitely has more like 758 maybe less maybe more. All I know is it runs very good so I'm not worried about losing the data too much. I figure If it stops working in between oil changes/maintenance, maybe it'll get me motivated to re do the wiring! Other than the oem hour meter All electrical works, but it's a bit messy.
pacer 3,177 #10 Posted April 2, 2023 @oliver2-44 I didnt do a 'deep' ck - I already have an hr meter on all my tractors so I sorta skipped thru them - there are MANY variations of them, In my skimming, I think I saw one that said it shut off if engine wasnt running? You just need to ck em out more than I did..... Use - 'digital hour meter tachometer' or something similar in search........
