2006 Briggs and Stratton help ?

Folks I've got this here B & S:

 

 

 

This is the powerplant for the Monster Splitter.  

 

Last year it would not run right unless the choke was 1/2 closed/open depending on your outlook. 😀

 

I changed the fuel filter and cleaned out the carb. It got better... But not quite correct.  

 

 

Sooooo......

This week I'm gonna:

 

Remove, empty, and clean out the fuel tank. (How?)

 

Change fuel filter, line, air filter, spark plug, rebuild carb and mount with new gaskets.  

 

Should I remove the welch plug?

Can I clean behind it if I don't remove it?

 

 

It's been suggested I should adjust the governor if possible. 

How do I accomplish that?

 

What else am missing?

thinking there is a very tiny hole up through the center of the bottom of the stem of the carb a trader. Might have a little debris in it?

Same Briggs I have on a pressure washer and a really good motor. Tank comes off easy. Screws & bracket on the underside. Should be able to find a manual for it online.

The tank may be filled with foam sponge to keep the fuel from sloshing.

Be careful with the tank. likes to leak where it's glued together.  I would take the plug out if there is a replacement in the kit. 

Mine had the same carbatrader issues too cause it sat for years. That's prolly why the tank started  leaking.  The pump was a POS so I shelfed it.  I be go to heck if a can of seafoam and some run time didn't cure it.

This pah'tic'ler tank is only 3 or 4 years old but it definitely has water in it. 

 

Can't drain out the bottom because the outlet is above the floor of the tank.

Before you take it apart check for an air leak such as a worn throttle shaft or carb to block gasket.  With it running spray areas with carb cleaner and see if engine (not motor) speeds up.

I've got one on a tiller.  Same problem.  Cleaned the carb, no difference.  Added Sea Foam to the gas, no difference. Put a rebuild kit in the carb including adding foam washer on the throttle shaft under the throttle arm, slight improvement.  Moved the governer spring one hole, no difference.  Sprayed carb cleaner on the throttle shaft, hunting stopped.  Was out of time and needed the tiller, so I got my tilling job done  with a hunting engine.

 

I did not pull the freeze plugs out of the carb when I rebuilt it.  I think that is the next step.  Maybe a dab of grease on the throttle shaft would help.  New carb if that does not work.

Good idea on the alcohol.

Already apart but I'll check it on reassembly. 

 

Throttle shaft doesn't seem to have excessive play but I don't know what the actual spec is. Could be more sensitive than an old Kohler. 

That "carb to block gasket"... I'd thought of that too. There's a plastic spacer between the carb and block. 

My repair shop guy says he very rarely takes them off but I think I'll pop this one and put a new gasket in both sides of the spacer.

For 94$ replace that "powerplant" with a pulley and belt drive it from one of the horses?

Not a bad idea. Actually now that you mention it. I would probably try to figure out where to mount that hydraulic pump on a horse and run a couple of quick disconnect hoses to the splitter.  

That way I would be one step further towards an FEL later...

  That idea has been rattling around in my mind, too.

 

With a tractor mounted hydraulic system, one could come up with a variety of hydraulic powered attachments.  Ice cream maker, soil sifter, cement mixer.......

Well peoples. 

The beast is up n runnin' again. 

 

First things first. Thanks for the excellent ideas and help, as usual.  

 

Today I commenced to the cleaning up and reattachifying of the crabutrader. 

 

 

 

Turned out it had water throughout. 

Through-in too now that I think about it. 

 

I sprayed brake clean through it every which way but loose, then did that too, just to cover all my bases.  

(Never did figure out who's on first though)

 

The main High RPM feed bore was some gummeded up. 

 

The main jet/bowl holding nut was the same and worse.  Look carefully inside the bore. 

 

So I used the sharpest pick/awl I could find and VERY carefully cleaned it up.  

 

 

The main mounting surface was quite pitted.

 

 

I sanded that on a flat sheet of metal with 120 grit.   

 

 

Cleaned out the tank. Added the mini fuel filter. 

 

Did the rest of the assembly, checked and added oil and fired it up.

Water droplets were coming up out of the breather hose and landing on the way to the carb.  

I checked the fill tube/dipstick holder and there was basic tan muck in it. 

But NOW.... We know the water's in the crankcase. 

So we dropped the ole/earl/oil into a bucket. 

 

Refilled that. Started her up again.

Again. 

The rotten cuss just quit. Shut off. Died dead. 

WTF??!!???

 

Trina tried to start it again whist I watched and saw that the spark (normally contained inside a wire) was landing on the heat shield. 

 

So I got a new plug boot out my stock of me-built plug wire parts box. Thanks @squonk. 

 

 

 

Fired it up again and 

SUCCESS!!

Rub some gas into that Boo-Boo and wrap it with 3M electrical tape. don't want any infections!

I've allotted considerable quantities of rubbing alcohol for already.

Evaporates too fast and if you catch fire the flame is invisible.

Come to think of it, I sanded both flange faces on my carb flat - again, it did not help.

 

Didn't think to do a magnified inspection of the main jet.  Next time I tinker with it, I'll check that.

These carbs sometimes clean up...others not, i usually keep a chinese replacement on hand in case, they run well and dirt cheap.

  I've had a couple of engines where Sea Foam helped, and some where it did not.
