6 speed swap

just picked up a 6 speed for my 857 i’m excited to bolt it up me and @danweikert21 will keep you guys updated

there isn’t a ton of reason to be honest with you besides the fact that’s it’s a hi low trans  and that the transmission that’s in it is shot but i will be taking it apart to look at and try and fix

The upper range of a high low is the same gearing as a three or four speed.

 

You'll get two benefits out of changing from a 3-speed to a 6-speed transmission.

One is that the axles are a little beefier but quite frankly that has never been proven to make much difference to me.  

 

The other is that the 6 speeds have Limited Slip Differential.

 

 

Low range really won't do anything for you unless you are backing slowly or using implements like a tiller.

do you know the oil capacity of the six speed ?

2 quarts. Least expensive 80 or 90 weight you can find.

 

 

Three or four speed capacity is 1.5 quarts but I put two in mine when I refill.

That transmission is either a #5060 or a #5071...depending on the differential end plates.  10 pinion Limited Slip.  :bow-blue:

So since we were talking about limited slip the other day, if you try to spin one hub forward and the other backward, it will give a pretty gnarly clicking/jamming sound in the rearend.  That’s that spring trying to hold everything in the same position and is a good thing.

If it has the aluminum end plates it would be another good reason not to subject it to shock loads.

If it's holding right and the transmission is just on the bench or floor or whatever with no hubs or wheels you'd be hard pressed to do that.

yea i took the shifter out to fill it and now i can’t get it back in properly:/

it seems like it’s in but the shifter won’t move

You’ll get it!  Make sure the shift forks are lined up before you start.  [ ] they should make a square when they are in the right spot for the shifter to go.

i see it now they aren’t lined up how do i move it ?
