older snowblower drive shaft bearings

Recommended Posts

briankd

i got my interest back of restoring my early  36"  st  short shoot snowblower after seeing the neighbor using his  new cub cadet struggling getting thru snow drift in his drive .

seen on here awhile back someone did some modifications to get bearings to work on drive shaft of single stage . i found a source for sprockets and  bearings real reasonable  and i think W.H. used some discontinued size bearings . this source can get a new shaft 20 bucks but would have to come up with a belt pulley to work or machine out the bore of the pulley i have . tried looking for the post on here but seem to can't find it any help?

this has the extender plates on each side guess that puts it to 42 inches wide and this would work great on my c145 auto

You're not thinking of this one are you Brian?

I used different bearings and replaced the shaft and sprocket.  I re-used the pulley.  I did cut that shaft down later!  ;)

This link should take you right to the post with the part number of the bearings I used.

 no someone else on here made some sort bushing that bushed the bearing down to the same size of the jack shaft but what you done is exactly what i was thinking of doing . found them same bearings you used or they had the 3 hole flanged ones they say they are lightweight brgs but the ones you have are heaver duty . just a few bucks difference . found all the brgs , shaft and chain on the big bearing store .com and pretty reasonable compared to buying it here locally

If I recall correctly the original 3/4" ID bearings have a larger OD than is what is commonly available today.

The bearings with a 7/8" ID have have that OD so a bushing was used to fit the 3/4" shaft.

The late model snowthrowers used a 7/8" shaft.

that is what i was trying to remember someone on here had a post on doing just that using 7/8 " id brg bushed it to fit 3/4 " shaft but may as well replace jack shaft not that much more work and for only 20 bucks

@briankd

Brian, are you going to replace the auger bearings also?

It's worth considering.

my auger bearings are smooth as silk surprisingly for the age of it . i do have the auger out of it . thought leave them alone not that bad to pull the auger out . i have to fab a new cutting edge  my blower housing worn down on one side at least 3/4 to an inch  but rest of housing mint . weird thing left work and drive by mower shop and he had a C175 with this same blower mounted on it for sale. i stoped and checked it out and asked about parts he has 2 new flags and 4 used flags also he says he has 4-5 used SS blowers out in a pile may be able to scrounge couple parts I'm missing the guards that go around the chain top and bottom . i was going to fab them up . this blower will be a late summer early fall project  and would have it ready for next year now i am working on getting my C145 up and going and will put it on it . seen your post may have to do some mod's to get the belt to line up with tractor some one in past made the mod's to hook this to a front tach o matic  maybe the belt will line up

At the least then you might consider popping the seals and re-greasing the bearings.

@briankd  this is my favorite grease for tough spots- lucas  extra heavy duty , polyurea rated 560 drop point , anti sling , us it in my mower deck bearings , mule drive bearings , pto cone needle bearing , no whining  or high pitch noise . have cleaned out and re greased  new bearings , bombproof . when buying a bearing always look for a wider rubber side shield . to make a re grease very easy , keep it greasy pete
