K series kohler 16 running rough

Recommended Posts

After plowing snow for about 40 minutes my 416-8 with a K series Kohler started running rough.  I managed to keep it running by bring it down to almost an idle. It was still running rough at almost an idle.  I thought it might have some water in the gas so I put some sea foam in and also changed the pulg and gas filter. Still running rough, should I drain the gas or jump right into a carb cleaning?

Why do you suspect water in the fuel?

Do you run a fuel filter?

Is there any way that you can get video?

Definitely sounds like it isn't getting enough fuel... or the fuel that it is getting is bad. Does it run better at higher throttle when you add choke?

Thanks,

Don

With all that snow and wind, it is possible that some snow got under the hood and some of your wiring got wet.  Do you store it in a heated garage?  Let everything dry out and see if that brings her back to life.  Snoopy11 is correct also...old gas, etc.  Just things to look for when we are guessing.  :eusa-think:

One other thing I would test... when it is running rough... try to spray some carb cleaner into the intake, see if that makes a difference in the way it is running.

Don't overlook carb icing as a possibility also. BUT... if the problem has persisted long after it was running, it's probably not that.

My C-175 has pretty severe icing problems under certain temperature / humidity conditions.

If you think it's a water in the gas problem, use a product like HEAT. It contains 90% methanol which will absorb the water. Products like Seafoam only contain about 10% rubbing alcohol. Better still, drain the tank and refill with fresh gas. Clear the filter and fuel lines as well.

@snowhound  in addition to the replies above , when ever I  use a carb cleaner like seafoam  or similar , I use the hand suction  on the carb and hand on carb linkage to pull that cleaner thru  the carb body . the combination has often cleaned out the crud , causing the issue . also agree with @rmaynard on the possible tank issue , experience tells me any problem is RARELY ONE AND DONE. the possible related set up could need attention. pete
