Recommended Posts

Yes, I know WH are best and by far the easiest to work on tractors. ialso already have the WH straight from the Horses Mouth book.

But I'd like to improve my knowledge about all of the older brands to know what some of the unusual, unique rare, etc ones are.  Mr/Mrs Google (hows that for being politecly ccorrect) gave me this list of books that are out there.

Does anyone have any of these books or others that they would recommend.

I've got the first 5 on your list.  None of them are like the Straight From the Horses Mouth in terms of rare models/ attachments.  The first one is more of a general reference of a majority of the common/less known tractor companies with an overview of when they started and stopped making them and where they were made.  The next 4 are just copies of ads from back when they were made out of magazines and newspapers.  Some of the ads do list basic info like models with the engine type and HP and transmission types.   There is one by Oscar H. Wills III that's titles Cub Cadet the first 50 Years that's an excellent reference for info on the rare models and has just about every spec for every model made from 1961 to about 2002 with a little about the ones made from then to 2011.  Doesn't really cover the lawn tractor line other than a few mentions and a couple pictures of them though.  Think he also put out a revised edition called the first 60 years too, but haven't looked into that one

Can't think of any others for GTs off the top of my head right now

We have a fairly large section of books like that at our city library.  Maybe check yours out.  :eusa-think:  If you find one you want, check out Amazon, they may have it used or new. :occasion-xmas:

Regrettable I've checked several town libraries on-line around me and they don't have any, or much on tractors at all.

This Rocky Texas Hill Country wasn't known much for farming.  In the 1920's-1950's it was poor goat and sheep land.

Then the 6 lakes were built and it became $$ recreation home land.

@diesel cowboy Of the ones you have which one would you say has the most complete listing of tractors back to the 1930's

Really looking for just a list, picture, and what engine, maybe transmission it had.

Really not looking for as much "story" on the company as "Straight From the Horses Mouth" has.

I'd have to say the Garden Tractors volume 1, 2, and 3 by King would have the most complete listing of what you're looking for.  They are just copies of old ads but the info on them is invaluable.   I wouldn't say that it's 100% complete due to the huge volume of manufacturers that tried their hand at making or selling garden tractors over the years but it's well worth trying to get a copy to use for reference.

The one by Baas is the same as the ones by King.  I know there's some duplication of make/model but can't remember if there's any that aren't in the other 3
