C-125 drive belt cover.

Recommended Posts

Jeff-C175

My new to me C-125 has a notch cut out of the drive belt cover for some unknown reason.  Is this a 'thing' that some people do for some unknown to me reason?  Maybe they just wanted to see the belt moving?  Why?

image.png.300cdaa21fbd875f169968e70d15951c.png

Problem is, it 'flops around' at the top because it's missing that anchor point.  I'm going to restore this to original but I'm not sure what original looks like.

Can someone post a pic of what this should look like please?

It's obviously different than my C-175 shown below, that arrangement won't work due to the bolts for the solenoid being in the way.

They also went bat 5h1t crazy here at the front.  I understand why they did this, but they went overboard.  I did similar to my 175 because the cover was interfering with the belt guide piece.

They really only needed to take out a little bit from the top, as I did on the 175 and it looks like it's supposed to be that way:

Yes, I could use a new guide rod there... but it's OK, it works.  But that's the reason for the cutaway.

If we only knew why people do what they do. We could stop so many crimes, including :wh: mutilation.

I blew up the pics much as possible and it looks like a simple "L" bracket, is that correct?

Yes.mine is tack welded to the guard and bolts to a larger L bracket with several holes that bolts to frame below and behind the battery… took a couple closer pics…

Thank you very much!  Exactly what I needed to see!

:thanks::thanks::thanks:

I started restoring the guard to original.  Got that pointy piece at the end pieced back in and started on the missing wedge.  I would have just cut one piece but I didn't have any stock big enough.  When I'm done it will look like one piece from the outside.  I'll weld the L bracket in just as you've shown on yours.

All done... this pic doesn't have the mounting tab on it yet, but that's done too.  Got a coat of primer drying now.

It's by no means perfect, but welding 0.060 sheet metal is not my forte!  ( actually, welding ANYthing is not my forte, but I'm improving each time...)

Welding thin stuff is not easy, and I am not good at it. There must be a trick that I haven't figured out yet.

That being said, your repair looks great! Nice save on that!

@Tractorhead posted a YouTube video where the guy was welding body panels.  He would tack every few inches and let cool.  Then he would go back and tack next to them and cool with an air schnozzle.  He continued this way until the seam was filled.

40 minutes long... but worth watching!  Check out Part One also!

Tedious and time consuming, but if you overheat the panel you will warp it for sure.  I used his trick and it worked very well, but I got impatient because it was taking too long.  Guess what?  There is a slight bulge on the bottom part of the patch because I ran a bead about an inch long and overheated it.  Stretched the metal.  Tried heating it again and dousing it with water to shrink it back... didn't work.  It's really not noticeable to anyone but me.  At least not without the gloss red paint, we'll see how that works out.  Looks like Turkey day will be a good day for painting.

And, the Treasurer is actually right that it doesn't have to be 'perfect'!  But she is wrong that it's "only a tractor"!

The perfectionist in me will probably 'red lead' and sand it before top coating.

I'll post up a pic after it's painted.

The Treasurer?

Nothing funnier than the truth!

But you're right- took me years to train mine to stop calling them "lawnmowers"... Definitely not just a tractor!

And, if you are using a MIG... pull WAY back with the welding gun... make it 3/4-1 inch away from the material being welded... this will produce a cooler burn, thereby filling the hole/crack... but not burning through. :)

Okay, I know for a fact that you used a flap grinder on that... no other way to get it that smooth.

Am I right...? :confusion-confused:

You gotta admit... I was very close! Those might be better than flap discs... but I have a tote full of flap discs... so I won't be investing in the Amazonian discs any time soon... :laughing-rolling:
