414-8 sloppy steering

Recommended Posts

Mustang67ford

Working on a 414-8 and one of the issues is lots of play in the steering.  Looked for similar posts but didnt really see any.  I noticed a good amount of play where the steering shaft goes into the bottom support,  part #109733.  I dont know if the support is worn or if irs the shaft itself.  Is there a replacable bushing or bearing in the support?  Up by the dash, I know there is a bushing there as well but that can be fixed fy adding a flanged gearing.  Also, my steering wheel looks different.

I'd think that steering wheel has been changed.

The lower support can be drilled and bushed. That's a fairly common wear area.

Another thing to look at is the fore/aft play in the lower part. The horizontal shaft that goes from that block forward that has the fan gear as part of it. Placing washers or spacers in the right place at the end can pull it towards the gear that rides with the fan which reduces the amount of play between the two.

Check out this thread. Lots of good info...

Does the upper steering rod go into a bearing or bushing or something at the bottom block,  part #109733?  Trying to see how to deal with that slop before taking it all apart.

I don't believe there's a bushing in the top of that block.

The blocks are well known to wear the hole oblong side to side.

If you have access to a drill press with a vise that can be angled and held well you can certainly do the repair to the block by drilling and adding a bushing.

I have done 2-3 that way and it is relatively easy and cheap ---- but, (theres that 'but') You will need the proper setup like @ebinmaine sez, an angle vise and a good drill press (or mill even better) It needs to be pretty accurate or it will only wear quickly.

I do have a drill press and an angle vise.  Sounds like a I might be better off getting a new block though.  It also might be the steering shaft that is worn.  What bushing do I go with if I decide to drill out?

I agree, and that is one item that there seems to be plenty of - so put it in wanted section, and prowl the bay.

Will try to find a new one.  A used one might be worn just as bad.

Certainly understand but really.... No worries there.

Lincoln ONLY sells parts that are in absolutely EXCELLENT condition.

I'd not hesitate a half a heartbeat to install anything he says is good.

That said, there's a new one on fleabay for 30 bucks shipped.
