Installing a new belt it may need to be run a little before it behaves as it should even with everything set right, the belt guard needs to be in place before it works as it should.

I usually go half way between...  2 and a half eighths !

But seriously, anywhere between 1/8 and 1/2 is fine

Is this the wire stud for the magneto on the twin Briggs ? There is a blue wire that goes to the magneto. I assume it is this blue wire because:

a. It’s the only blue wire that I don’t have hooked to something.   and

b. It is zip tied to the same wire that goes to the two prong socket end that goes to the stator. Both of these are near each other.

Does the other end go to the key switch?  Does it conveniently reach the stud on the magneto?

I could go out and look at my pressure washer (same engine) but not sure that would help... I'll head out in a little bit.

Got the jams nuts on the tie rod ends where @Jeff-C175 suggested… I previously only had jam nuts on one end

The blue wire is the kill wire for the mag.  The belt cover doesn't have to be on for the clutch to work correctly on the 300/400 series 8 speeds, or the Work Horse series.  There is a belt brake bolted to the hood stand.  Belt cover should be on for safety.

Got a battery today. Got most of the wiring done, barring headlights, taillights, seat switch.

Got the choke and throttle cables on, need  plastic knob on the throttle handle…

My fuse holder has a 30 amp fuse… book says it should be a 15 amp.

Why would the PO put a 30 amp in there ?

I’m gonna go back to a 15 and see how it works.

I believe so.  That should be the "ground to kill" post on the magneto.

Can't get a good shot on my engine, it's crowded there, but the arrow is pointing to that stud.  The wire comes up and goes to that toggle switch which grounds that terminal when OFF.  That's what your ignition switch does when it is off.

I forget what those other wires are... too cold out there to hang around for long and figure it out again!

It's a time-waster to try and second guess why a PO might have done what he done.

I would say he had a 30 and no 15s so he just stuck that in there.

No need for a 2nd guess then … your guess makes sense… I’ll go back with a 15 amp fuse.

Thanks…

@Jeff-C175, @kpinnc, @lynnmor, @WHX??

I’m needing spark plugs for the 16 hp twin Briggs…

It had Champion J19LM’s in it.

Manual calls for RJ12, but I can’t find RJ12…

is it fine to put the J19LM plug back in it( new of course)

????  Where are  you looking?  Did you axe Mrs. Google to help?

But, it does appear to be physically the same size at the J19 ... not sure about the heat range though.  That might be the 19 part of the number.

I believe the " R " at the front of the designation denotes that it's a RESISTOR plug.

So, the 19 could be a different temperature range and a NON resistor plug.

It will WORK, but may, or may not be, correct.

I appreciate it @Jeff-C175… I was trying to get the plugs today.

You could certainly use the plugs you have for that!

Do you know if the engine is solid?  Doesn't burn any oil?  Just wondering if there's a reason PO used a plug seven heat ranges hotter...

PO probably put that plug in for the same reason he used a 30 A fuse.

Not really… only ran it for a few seconds when I first got the tractor

Don’t know that either… haven’t ran it to see smoke or any other indicators.

I was wondering about that too .

I hope that’s the only reason he did it .

I would probably go back to the recommended plug after you play around with it a bit, and then after running it a while and determining the engine condition, pull the plug for a 'read' and see what ya got and go from there.

Here's sumpin' else that might help.  Looks like the Briggs SINGLES use the 19 but the twins use the 12.
