OH NO sir, no, you weren't supposed to take it that way at all. It was supposed to be funny! I don't understand a thing about computers or what you posted, dear sir, and the fact that you posted something... that in-depth, is exceptional. My whole post was intended to be humorous. "Ban plz" is a humorous irony. It was not intended to incite, or anything like that. I hope you hear my heart, dear sir, it was not meant to be taken in a negative way.

The model of the router in the long list give you the factory password used to access the router via the address which you type into your web browser.

Once you have logged into the administration panel you can change the factory password, as one member suggested write the password onto tape placed onto the bottom of the router. We have a notebook to keep track of the pwds.

From the router control panel accessed via your browser suing the address provided in the list, you can make changes to your WIFI, change the settings with a user identification and password protected.

Often I see a vehicle parked above our very rural house on the highway hoping to find an open WIFI connection, nothing nefarious. Just someone hoping to be able to use their phone via an open WIFI. As cell service is non existent.

With cellular paid plans you are able to use the phone via WIFI were cell service is not available, to use this option you may have to contact your provider.

For one neighbor I have set his phone to work from his home WIFI, he now has full range service on his property. His WIFI is password protected no one is able to leach from the signal.

Driving through our small town, I'm able to locate several open WIFI signals, simply because these folks have relied on the ISP to protect them. Wrong assumption as the ISP is not responsible to secure their hardware.

I really wish I knew more about computers, WIFI, Routers, Cell service, and such things. I even wish I knew how to operate my dash cam, and GPS to their full extent, but I don't. I just muddle through. If you look back in this thread you will see that I bought a new laptop. My old one (bought in 2012) was just too slow, and seemed to bog down easily, and occasionally just shut down on occasion.  I spent about $1200 on a new one. My old one was about the same price in 2012. Once I got the new one, I took the old one to the shop, and told them to upgrade it. IF I remember right, the cost was about $200. They changed it to a SS hard drive, (I think) and increased the ram, (I think). I don't know what either of these things really do, but it helped the old laptop a lot. So much so, that now I would rather use my old computer. They wiped it clean, and reinstalled Windows 10, Google, Libre Office, Malware,  and a few other things I wanted. It's not that this new one isn't nice, but I was use to the old one, and I liked it. As far as the physical characteristics of the 2, they are the same size. 17" screen, but that's about all that's the same. Using the new one compared to the old one is like driving a 1966 Chevy Impala compared to a 2016 Chevy Impala. With the '66 you have some "meat" to it. It feels solid. The 2016 model is all plastic. This new laptop is much thinner. Weighs practically nothing, and even looks smaller, even though they have the same size screen. The old one could read and write discs. This new one doesn't even have a pop out cup holder.  This new has buttons the other one didn't. I have no idea what they do. So did the old one, but not as many. Just what does the "alt" key do anyway? As far as I know, I have never needed it. My son is an IT Tech for a large accounting firm in the "big city" He knows computers pretty well I think, but I think he's getting a little tired of all my tedious questions, so when I can ask questions and get answers here, or someplace else, I do. When I run into big trouble he runs some program and takes over operation of my computer, and controls it from his home. It's strange to watch your cursor moving around, windows opening and closing, and you're not no touching anything. With mechanical things, I can see levers moving back and forth, bell cranks rocking, gears spinning, turning other gear, belts and pulleys operating. With electronics, there is nothing to see. I'm sure things are happening, but if I can't see it, :confusion-confused:   In my defense I wasn't born with a cell phone in my hand. I didn't grow up with all these gadgets. When I was a kid, if you, or your dad, wanted to change channel on the TV, you got up off your butt and turned a knob. Maybe the channel would come in, maybe not. My very first computer was a Mac Plus. I think it was $3400 in ~1985. Mt first cell phone was a bag phone. You had to carry around this little bag that held the phone and a battery about the size of a decent flashlight. For the record, if you sink you boat, they didn't float. Just an FYI. On the upside, I never heard of a bag phone that suddenly burst into flames.

Electronic innovation is of course a wonderful thing, but.......There are some things I am not completely sold on. Driverless cars?  Not for me. Satellites that can track my every move?  I'd rather not.

Like I said, I would rather use my old computer, but if I stick this new $1200 gadget in a bag, and stuff it into a closet, my wife just might stuff me in there with it. So I use it.

Long post I know. I really gotta find me something to do. :coffee:

Absolutely correct. I only serve business clients, and have them all set up so I can log into any one of their computers from anywhere in the world (almost, I have restrictions in place, i.e. "rogue" nations are all blocked by default) and I won't do it any other way.

99.999% of my work supporting my clients is all remote. Some clients, the only time they see me is when I make it a point to visit just to say, "Hi, remember me?"

@Gregor Your file upload worked fine, it's just that the file format is not a common one, so many people's computers don't know what to do with the file.
In Calc you can try and save to PDF. Select FILE>SAVE AS, choose PDF as File Type, name the file, take note of the location where you saved it, and click Save.
If you're using a recent enough version of Calc, it will have this option built in. Any computer can read a PDF file. We just won't be able to modify the file. That can only be done in Calc, or other spreadsheet program.

While Wardriving is a concern, the article is a bit scare-mongery. As long as you have a Wifi password set, you should be fine.

While it's always a good idea to change a default ADMIN password on a router, that's not going to help the attackers until they connect to your network.
In order for the attacker to be able connect to your network, they have to either physically plug in a cable (highly unlikely), or get on your Wifi.
While both are important, a good WiFi password is much more important than changing the admin password on your router.

Which brings up the obvious question: "What is a good password?"

This definition has changed many times since computers were invented, however the current recommendations might surprise you.

Use passphrases instead of passwords.

Do not frequently change passwords.

Use a unique passphrase for each login.

What is a passphrase?
We've spent decades telling people that this password, which they can not possibly remember, "24Yesterday$s" Is a good strong password.
But people can't remember that, and today's computers can guess that in seconds.
How about: "AllOfUsHereHaveLove4WH!"

That's a kick ass password which all if you will remember if you read it 3-4 times. Take out all some of the CAPS, simplify it some, but keep a good long length. You already memorized it!
And what's more, computers will have a helluva time guessing all those characters. Password length = king!

Or better yet, just get a solid Password Manager like BitWarden and call it a day. ;)

That looks like an older version, so it's likely not built in. If you have Windows 10, you can also Print to PDF. If you're on Windows 7, it may or may not be installed.

If you click FILE>PRINT and post a screenshot of your printers, we an see if you have that installed.

Just renewed my annual to LastPass, another good option (I have it on my laptop, phone, and tablet). I have over 200 distinct passwords to the different services and systems that I've used in the past couple of years plus the passwords of several more-senior-than-me folks whose systems, services, and phones I look after. The password for LastPass is an extremely long phrase!

(This just made me realize maybe I ought to start cultivating the friendship of a young person now so they'll be able to look after me in a few years!)

Normally when you choose File/Print you get a new pop-up window (called a dialog box) that lets you choose options for printing. Then you click "OK" or "Print" or some other button to actually send the document to the printer.

@echris was hoping you'd pause when you got that dialog box and take a screenshot (with your phone is fine) and post that picture. That way, we can see what options you have and help you choose useful ones :)

Good luck!

Looking good, @Gregor

I'm not an expert on the latest version of Windows but here goes...

In the clip below, the box under "Printer" is showing you the name of the printer the computer is about to use to print the document/spreadsheet (this is your HP printer which is set as the "default printer"). But the computer can print to other places! On the same line, being pointed to by the green arrow, is a "v" in a gray-shaded box. Clicking on that "v" should expand the printer name box downward into a list showing you all the possible printers your system can use. It is very likely that something like "Print to PDF" will be in that list. If it is, click on that to tell the computer that you want this document to "print" into a PDF file (once you choose this destination, the list will close and you'll see the "Print to PDF" name (or similar) in the one-line box. NOW click on the "Print" button at the bottom and a new window opens to ask you to name the PDF file and choose where you want it to go. I think you can handle it from here!

Sorry, I missed this posting yesterday.

Not to be pedantic, but can you post a picture of the printer list? Did you not get a list? Was PDF not on the list? Did you have PDF but then didn't get to name and place the file?

Ya know, I think we kinda went off the rails on this thread.

@Gregor, can you please remind us what it is that you need to do, or can't do?, or what's not working for you

We went from uploading/internet issues to PDF problems and I'm not really sure how? :)

Give us half a chance and we could drift any thread!  Well, at least I could!

Speaking of drifting, I once built a raft as a kid... :teasing-neener:
