This engine was brand new and I bought it with 3hrs on it. Never mounted to anything but a c81 wheel horse and now this lol

Engine is mounted, wiring is all squared away, just needs a gas tank and a battery and it should run and drive..

In the area I circled in blue does the belt hit the side of the guard?

That'd wear the belt off right quick. 

Might be fine. I can't tell from the angle.

I really like the look of this, but I'm thinking you may want to consider raising this engine about an inch. I've had to do the same on every repower I've ever done. WH likes those deep oil pans, and matching another engine can be tricky.

 

You may get lucky without doing it, but the belt guard is an integral part of the "clutch" function on a manual tractor. It supports the belt so that it stops completely when the pedal is depressed. Without it, the belt continues turning and this causes difficult shifting, grinding gears, and uneccesary wear.

Having a 520-8, ur gonna need to address the belt guard. Like the others stated, it's needed on the manual trans tractors for slowing/stopping belt when clutch is engaged. Almost looks like it needs to go up n towards the back for the crank to be in the spot as the original. Or could redesign the belt guard, but think that would be harder than jsut raising the engine....Curious to hear the exhaust, mines on it's 3rd since I've had it, and not spending money on the OEM!!!! Awesome build too!!

There is a interior flange the the bottom side of the belt lays on when the belt is stopped for changing gears. That flange is welded to the inside of the belt guard on single cylinder Kohlers. My 520-H it is bolted to the hoodstand the 520-8 drawings shows the same. With the clutch depressed the belt should lay on the flange, with the clutch out it should be above the flange. This can tell you how much you need to raise the engine.

Belt guard was just sat there to make sure I could get it off once the exhaust was on. That’s all getting cut apart today

I have done 100s of repowers on wheel horses the belt guard was just sat there to make sure the exhaust wouldn’t come close to it. I’ve already spent a couple hours making sure the belt didn’t rub anywhere since the pulleys are swapped. I appreciate the concern from everyone but trust me I know lol

@Bens vintage tractors really like the looks of that swap , any more details on the engine for a track down detail ?  another thing while you are trimming up that belt guard , are you going to punch some vent holes in it ?  looks like a neat go to swap , pete

Honda gx690 but a predator 670 will do just the same and those are easier and cheaper. Don’t need any vents on these vtwins they keep them selves very cool.

Not to mention the cylinders are above the guard unlike an opposed twin.

One of the things I'm doing on the Colossus build (flat opposed K582) is using small pieces of C or U channel to wrap the belt top and bottom instead of a full belt guard. All open area where there normally would be sheet metal.

@kpinnc think that picture says it all , reuse of kohler  pto  attachment points and  brackets , cooler cylinders , spin on filter , pressurized lubrication  , only thing missing is a druel  bib, love it , pete

I was gonna use flat bar, but your idea sounds better. 

 

I cut almost the whole side out on my 520-H, and never finished it. Still need to do something with it.
