No Low Box.

Recommended Posts

My C-81 which I use with a finger bar, has decided not to engage low box. Had a chat with our resident trans guru, Stevasaurus, and Squonk. The general consensus was a broken selector fork.

Today I decided to remove the trans. I'd already removed the finger bar. This morning front end was jacked up left for the oil to drain. This afternoon started on removing the trans.

  Progress at end of play.

I was pleased to find the hubs slid of easily with a little light help from a three legged puller. The drive pulley like wise. When the hubs had been fitted, the shafts had had a smear of oil.

The trans is now propped up on end to drain any oil left in.

I'm not going to give a blow by blow account, as a full rebuild is already cover by Stevasaurus in tutorials.

I've noticed over the past few years that gear oil in the afternoon smells a lot like gear oil in the morning.

Keep us posted Norm...

Any when you get it on your coveralls, you smell it until the coveralls are in the landfill!

Nonsense. They smell totally different.

We service open diffs in the morning, limited slip in the afternoon. The friction modifiers really change the smell.

Got it apart this morning. Used some Stanley blades to break the seal. Then a couple of screwdrivers to open it up a bit more then two large chisels.

Here's what I found.

Only welded on one side and the weld hadn't taken hold. Only on were you can see the missing piece. If I can't get one from the Toro dealer I may get a mate to weld it up.

IF the part isn't excessively worn, and IF you can get it cleaned up, degreased, and sitting straight I'd go ahead and weld it instead of replace it.

I'm sure I don't have to tell you, but wouldn't be a bad idea to check everything else inside the trans while you got it open.

Glad you found the problem part. Nice when its blatantly obvious so you aren't pulling our hair out figuring out what's wrong.

:text-yeahthat:Not with my welding skills tho!

That one end does look bent and worn tho so maybe not a bad idea to look for a replacement?

The fork itself is/was slightly bent. If I do get it welded I won't be doing it. Mig would be the best way and I don't posses one. I now have the part number thanks to Squonk, so off to Carlisle in the morning and hope I'll be lucky.

Rest of the box is clean and in good condition.

Quote from Toro this morning. £90. :o It's now with an ex-workmate of mine to weld. He's very good with small stuff and cheap. He doesn't charge me.

If it doesn't look great when it's done tho Norm don't put it back in. I'm sure we could find a decent used one over here.

Just ask @Racinbob or myself how many time we had to reopen a box cause things weren't right. Then there's the time the wrist watch got left in one.... :hide:

Even in my dreams I have opened these things time and time again. Cut no corners. Get it right before you close it up.

OK Jim, what did I miss on the wrist watch thing?

Have no fear. I'll not be taking any chances. I'll be testing it before installation. (Install BFH smillie here) ;)
