Recommended Posts

Well fellas I’m making this listing I’m search of the best way to repair this gas tank other than plastic weld. It out of a 1969 gt14 and i can’t replace it so I need a way to fix it. Any ideas are welcome!

I recently found one of the black plastic pads on my Ford front bumper hanging by a plastic thread.  The attachment brackets had a thin cold joint were it originally attached to the pad.  I just finished using some JB Weld Plastic Epoxy to reattach the brackets to the pads.  In the picture you can see the whitesh line where the epoxy is filling some large gaps.    It was about $7 a tube, and I would guess you would need about 2-3 tubes. So if a new use done is impossible to find you might try this.  I scuffed the plastic with 220 sand paper then cleaned it with lacquer thinner. I let it set several hours to vent any fumes out of the plastic.  Because of the way it is curved, i glued the 2 ends of each bracket and let it dry over night.  Then i used spring clamps to push the bracket and bumper surface together and glued it, setting it at and angle to help keep the epoxy in the gaps.  If you can glue the tank cracks one at a time while you squeeze it at different angles to hold individual cracks closed it might be worth a try For what its worth I would drill a small one at the end of each crack to stop them from running just like welding cracks in steel.  Having 19richie66 make you a new tank is certainly the best option.   The plastic epoxy has some flex to it and my bracket reattachment seems quite strong.  So the plastic epoxy could be your next long shot option for $15 to $20 out of pocket.

Ok thank you and I just did, do you know his price for one or maybe an estimate? Also the pictures are from last night but after 1 coat of jb weld and 3 coats of permatex I think it’s going to hold for Hopefully a few months at least, when I plug the bottom and pressurize the top I can’t hear or feel any leaks and it inflates the tank rather than leaking so maybe just maybe it’ll work! Also I know it looks bad but it’s the best I could get.

I suppose, we have plans to do a complete restore in that tractor either this year or next, it is completely original besides the front tires. And the guy we bought it from was up in his 80’s and he had the original 48 inch deck, the 54 inch plow, the rear tiller that were all bought with it from a dealership in 69 witch is super neat so we want to restore it and all attachments and keep them together for a long time yet!

How about a small beer keg, or maybe a race car type Moon tank?

I would try that but it’s an all original machine and I’d like to keep it that way.

With a repair, I would only fill it half full of fuel if it were me, to dang close to the muffler.
