Vurge 158 #1 Posted November 6, 2020 If connected directly to the battery instead of the solenoid, does the regulator draw power when the engine is off?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,274 #2 Posted November 6, 2020 Are the two choices not at each end of the same battery cable? I would say no if the regulator is functioning properly. Garry

Garry Maybe that's the problem. The way I have it set up, the regulator only power when keyswitch on "S". After starting I assumed the S/G would provide power the regulator. I'm going to connect the regulator to the battery directly this morning and see what happens. Thanks for the info @gwest_ca.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,274 #4 Posted November 6, 2020 This manual has a good section on the starter/generator Garry
953 nut 58,218 #5 Posted November 6, 2020 Here are a couple of diagrams that show wiring of a S/G charging/starting system. The first is with a solenoid and 103-990 switch, the second is typical of the wiring found on early model but is not for a specific model.
Vurge 158 #6 Posted November 7, 2020 Thanks guys. I now suspect my voltage regulator (VR) is bad. I moved the VR connection over the battery side and left my DVM connected. Right after startup and for a minute after I see 13-14v volts... Then it drops to almost nothing (0.7v) and won't kick on again even when I put a load on the battery. Grounding the DF terminal immediately ups charge voltage to 15+ volts. I'll get a replacement on the way and update this post. 👍
Vurge 158 #7 Posted November 23, 2020 (edited) @gwest_ca @953 nut What a way for Amazon make a guy doubt his abilities. First time messing with a starter generator and I got TWO defective voltage regulators in a row! Third one works. Thanks for the info on how to run the wires so I could verify I did it correctly. That gave me the confidence to order that third regulator. I was just about to throw in the towel. Edited November 24, 2020 by Vurge Clarify
alwaysbusy 0 #8 Posted March 10, 2021 I am hoping the first diagram is suitable for my C-175 as now I am stuck not knowing where it all goes. Thanks.
pfrederi 18,380 #9 Posted March 10, 2021 C-175 is not what the diagrams are about you do not have a starter generator set up. Let me look for a correct diagram.
Vurge 158 #11 Posted August 7, 2021 I've got an update on this project. The 3rd solid state voltage regulator failed and I decided to install an old school mechanical model. I think it's a copy of the vintage 4 terminal Delco design. Took about a million trial and error adjustments to get the voltage set properly but it's working great now. I sprayed for about 3 x 35 gallon tanks this morning and battery is still fully charged. ☺ Not the prettiest, but it's 100% hard working!
