520H hour meter test

Recommended Posts

Horse Newbie

Hello all you caped crusaders out there on horseback... @lynnmor , @WVHillbilly520H , how can I test my hour meter ?

I was thinking an alligator lead to + side terminal and an alligator lead to the - side terminal.

An hour meter is simply an electric motor, connect 12 volts to it and the tenth digit should click up one digit every six minutes.

Sounds like it’s knackered, double check the polarity of your battery connections.

@lynnmorDoes knackered mean broke ?...:lol:

When you say polarity of battery connections do you mean the terminals on the back of the hour meter ?

If yes , I did check them.

I put the positive lead from the battery on the hour meter terminal that had the pink(power lead) wires going to it...

And I put the negative lead from the battery on the hour meter terminal that had the black( ground to oil pressure switch) wire on it....

Correct ?

Without looking at the diagram, I believe you did it wrong.

Knackered is a word our friends across the pond use instead of screwed up.

so I looked at the diagram and you are right, pink is positive.

With only 2 terminals on the back of the hour meter I'm not sure what else I could have done.

The pink wires supply power to the gauges, light green wires are gauge lights,

So I put the +from battery to the terminal that had the pink wires to it and,

put the - from the battery to the ground terminal on the hour meter ???????

See my edit above.  I really hate this phone, I usually use a laptop.

The diagram shows I & G terminals on the meter, do you have the positive on the I terminal?

Well @lynnmor I would say yes but my hour meter does not have an I or a G (wonder if any of the hour meters do)...so I put the + on the left, and put the - on the right terminal.

Now I say this assuming that the schematic is showing the way I'm viewing it.

I guess I could try them the other way and see if it works...:lol:

I'm assuming I means ignition/ switch and G means ground...

Okay @lynnmor...just seen your edit.

I switched them just now to see if it works at all or runs backwards...:lol:

When I say switched, I mean I hooked them up backwards...earlier I had them correct and it did not move, so just for giggles I hooked them up opposite just now.

If it runs backwards I'm gonna name the tractor Christine !:P:P:P

Well I had the wires switched for a good while and the hour meter still isn't running.

I believe it is shot...ordered one.

@lynnmor

Hope you did not take me trying to joke around as me being a smart alleck...because that is not what I meant at all.

I appreciate all the help I get from people on Red Square.

And I DID take you serious when you asked about me possibly having the leads hooked up backwards.

I just thought I would try them the other way and see what happened.

I figured the worse could happen would be it ran backwards.

Tim

I believe that many hour meters are made in such a way that they will only advance, otherwise many would have low hour tractors.  :angelic-halo:

@lynnmor

I didn't even really think about it being designed to run forward only...

But now when the rusty gears in my head start to turn, I'm thinking the designers built them to run forward so:

1.  It was less complicated.

2. To keep people from running them backwards to alter the true hours.
