NICE!!! Great looking tractor.Love my 701 will try to get some pictures in next day or two.Do yall think the 701's dont cut as deep as others or is it just my particular tractor?

The dash should be just plain. The dash the way I have is proper from all the research I have done. The only difference is that in the manual you will see the orientation of the throttle and choke different because originally they had them both on the left side. After the dash’s started breaking from all the stress put on them from pulling the cables they went to the orientation like I have them on my 701. There are a handful of originals out there with the other orientation but very few. The ameter with the black bezel and 0-15 amp range is also proper.

 

if you have any questions when you go to donyour restoration please feel free to ask. I have done pretty extensive research on these 701’s and own pretty much all the literature out there for them.

Sounds like you now our expert now on 701 restos. Any chance you a pic of the throttle and choke left side?My resto leaves little to go on here. Any chance you know about this? A spring loaded collar under the tank/dash. Original or PO or dealer fix?

The wheels were powder coated, I’m not sure what the color was called as I used sample chips to pick it

I’m not sure about the cut honestly because I’ve never mounted a deck on mine (I should since I have 3 decks) but they should be very similar to the later decks as they were close in construction.

So so here is a picture of a brochure showing the throttle and choke on the left. I have seen it on a couple very early 701’s but don’t have a picture handy of a tractor with that setup.

 

I also have never seen a spring under the tank...... I’m assuming someone did that so they could realign the wheel if they jumped a tooth but it seems dangerous to me to be able to lift the steering shaft up away from the fan gear while driving.

Oops should have been more clear in my  post .I was referring to the steering not cutting as deep.The only other round hood I have to compare it too is a 551 suburban...

If you are referring to the turning radius, your right. A round nose :wh: with the engine in the front does not seem to have a very tight turning radius. All of my square nose tractors turn much tighter than my 701 or 753. My 400 Suburban has a very tight turning radius.

I agree with the both of you, sorry for the misunderstanding there.... the turning radius is much less on especially the 61 701 and 62 tractors. With the redesigned axle in 63-64 it seems to get much better.

My thoughts too. There were a lot of bad repairs on the rest of the steering gear as well. 

 

That literature looks interesting, If you would be kind enough to forward copies of what you have to Garry @gwest_ca for adding to files here we would all appreciate  it. 

 

One more thing where would the serial number sticker be located?

Yes the steering on my 702 has the turning radius of a lumber wagon and has the identical gear of a 701 save of course the fan gear and support.

The SN sticker is located under the dash, I  attached a picture of the layout. If you need measurements I can get them for you. I measured my original stickers and placed the new ones in the same exact location.

Yea the before pictures have the wrong decals. It was pretty common actually. I have an rj also with the same decals on it i think some dealers offered to repaint the tractors and put new decals on (that’s my theory) since I’ve seen a bunch with these same decals.

I can get the measurements for you anytime, you could also put N/A or something on the decal if you don’t know the number. I got my decals from redoyourhorse.com

      This one was on Marketplace for quite a while with a hefty price tag.  I ask if he was flexible on price, Nope.  After a quite a while longer same question before I made the drive.  Come on up, maybe we can make a deal.  The rest is history, I didn't steal it, but I'm happy with the deal!
      Ya I know you want pictures, but there a little more interesting back story.  His granddad's business was Nicholson Machine and Equipment and he was a Wheelhorse Dealer in the 50's and 60's in Paris....., Tx  that is!  He sent me this picture of the glass window from the door to the business that he has framed.  
         
      He also wrote me a short note about his Granddad's business.  So after his he passed, his dad gave the tractor to him. he's had it for quite a few years and said it's always been garage kept.

      So if a Dealer owned this for his own use and never sold it, and then it passed to his Son, and then Grandson, that would technically make me the 1st buyer, 
       
        Ok so on to some tractor photo's
       
      beautiful double pulley belt guard front and center.  It starts with a spray of gas in the carb, but doesn't stay running.
       

      All there, nice and original, you can see a weld repair on the front of the belt guard,

      The plastic dash is intact and not cracked!

      My 1st old style split key.

      it still has the orignal Silverton Ags. They hold air, but their so hard they probable don't need any.  I wonder if their hard because they might still have calcium chloride in them???
        
      The hitch pin isn't frozen and the lift cable even works.

      Interesting decal plastered across the front of the hood.

      aluminum gas tank is fairly clean.

      Hood bottom tab has been repaired.

      topless view of the engine, needs a bath. The front tires are original and hold air, but have some splits across the thread.
       

      Homemade choke and throttle cable bracket.  The base of the engine has wet oil, so i suspect it needs some gaskets.

      Both axle seals are dry, but the input shaft and brake shaft seals leak.

      I've learned if the top of the transmission is filthy oily, it probable means theirs water in the transmission that has floated the oil out.  This one is clean so hopefully that's a good sign.

      Started some maintenance and a beautiful sight, not a drop of water, just black oil.  It shifts through the gears nicely so it will be interesting to see how it runs/drives.
      I'll gradually go all through it with my checklist.  701 Minor Overhaul Checklist.ods
       
      Then have to decide if I rub it down with linseed oil like it is, or buff with some steel wool or wet sand to bring a little more red out, then oil. 
      How would ya'll put your finishing touches on it?
       
      I'll update this thread as I do maintenance on it and get it running.

      So just picked up a 701, obviously the engine isn't right. I have a 7hp Kohler to put on and will put B&S on my Speedex. Anyone ever seen a post come out on the right from the rock shaft? It rotates with the lift handle and has no holes in it. It was done up well, almost looking factory.

      If anyone has a HL-5 Headlight setup on their Wheel Horse I would appreciate some help on getting the dimensions of the u-shaped pipe/tubing that the headlights attach to.

      I decided that I can make a couple sets for our Lawn Rangers by using conduit and steel plate. I have some chrome headlights that will work with no probelm to the tubing.

      The location of the muffler/exhaust on the tractor suggest the length of the tubing and angle has to be under ten inches to avoid any problem being close to the heat of the muffler and exhaust pipe.

      Any help with this information would be appreciated.
