I need to replace my C-125 Front axle - what swaps work?

Recommended Posts

I need to replace my C-125 Front axle (broken casting) - what swaps work? Decent prices on eBay, some complete with spindles & some steering parts. (212-H or 210-H Lawn tractor Cast iron front steering axle 114385 - good prices shipped) Any help here is really appreciated. And yes, I have used the Search function for more than a couple hours. Thanks in advance

Further image review shows 210/212-H axles are flat

I replaced my C-160 front axle with one from a 1968 Commando 8, tie-rods and all, just happened to be the same part number.

Could you show some pictures of exactly what part is broken?

These axle beams are not known for breakage.

I was just wondering if it was a spindle or something....

I've seen one cracked where the spindles pass through. Pretty well anything from 1967-1990 will fit as they are almost the same - well the ones I have are :D

Those 200 series axles will not work. Pretty much any axle from a horizontal engine model will

Since you have to buy and axle, you could go all and upgrade to an axle from a 520 and the gear reduction steering.  The whole used assembly usually sells for around $300

Yes, broke off chunk at spindle & rewelded up. kinda goofy repair. She's (boy or girl?) really in good shape compared to the usual junk I get. Took apart to blow the mouse nests out & look for interlocks shown on diagrams - this one has a clutch switch & a PTO switch. Got a new battery, cleaned the ignition switch & am tracking down the wires. Somebody has done a really nice job of rewiring but they used the same color. need to find all the grease points before starting it. Motor looks to be in good shape, belts look pretty good. Plastic fender/seat pan is pretty cracked - they threw in a metal one which I'll mount up. Once I get the new rear tires on (fronts kinda hold air) then I'll put back together & work on getting her started up.

I got a C-81 from the original owner recently which made me a Wheel Horse man. It came with a rototiller n front blade, which is why I started looking for a deck, the C-125 is a result of looking for a deck. I'll wait til their both side by side before making a decision on which to keep. C-81 or C-125 - which would anyone keep?

BOTH

If you absolutely have to choose between one or the other I would lean towards the 125 but only because he would give you the extra horsepower for rototilling and mowing

I hear ya - Would it be sacrilege to backdate the 125 with the 81 sheetmetal? Or move the 12hp to the 8hp engine bay?

All of the horses in our herd at home are older ones than those two generations so I'm not really sure what it would entail.

If what you need is an axle to get that 125 back up and running and you wanted to keep both there's probably a bunch of us that have spares.

I've got at least a couple in the parts pile myself.

Have to figure out how to get it from Maine to wherever you are.

Thanks - eBay is the way. I have an axle and but repair seems to be ok but getting a complete one with spindles would be nice. I'll prob keep the best axle & switch the other - I want to be able to sell off the extra running n operable.

Other side of the country - Bay Area - can't believe I found TWO Wheely's with attachments out here. And C models to boot. I was looking for a Wards 16 hydro but the attachments win - I think the manual Wheely's will be fine. I've been thru 4 LT's (big Lawn for Cali but nothing like the back east folks have) in the last 20yrs, got sick of fixing them to only break again.

I've a C-125 and a C-81. The C-125's 12hp engine into the C-81 would be the easiest thing to do. But I say keep both. I've also a C-121. Each tractor has a different use.

C-81 has a finger bar permanently fitted. C-125 mainly used for mowing and the C-121 is my ploughing tractor.

You'll do well with an old Wheel Horse.

The folks on this site are awesome to get information from  Parts network is excellent given the sources that we all have.

If you're not careful you might even make a friend or two.

Btw :text-welcomewave: to :rs:

i would also vote for keep both.👍

both seems at your description and on the Pictures in usable shape and not too raped at all.

If you have the space for keep em, do it

even because Wheelhorses tend to Herd.

Once it is allway‘s good to have a spare and as @Stormin suggested,

2 machines with 2 different Attachements make absolutely sense while no need of changing Attachments.

that saves time and Work.

and last but not least, better to have than to need..

btw, did i allready mentioned, they tend to herd 😂

I found this site and signed up about a year ago when I began my quest for my first Wheel Horse.

But I didn't say much at the time.

I just kinda poked around and got some info to help my search.
I was not prepared for the amount of members, threads, manuals, etc.
And then when I finally bought it, I found everyone so happy to help out and I contributed immediately.

And then I started giving questionable advice, because I had seem something similar on the 1st WH I've worked on regularly in nearly 30 years.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone. Been on a ton of Forums & this one feels much better than them all already

It's kinda funny, I'll see someone ask a question and I'm like Horsehack, "oooh, oooh, ooh Mr. Kotter, I know the answer!" because I just want to give back some. :sad-bored:

:WRS:  Superfly. I'm up near Carlisle. I see the mini has the steering wheel on the right. Here or over the Pond? I've had mini's in the past.  Go to introductions and introduce yourself. :handgestures-thumbup:
