How do you mask off a tire to paint the rim if there is NO space between rim and tire?

I go to lowes and get a roll of roof flashing that is about 5 inches wide. I cut it a little bigger than the wheel and tape it to size. I paint several wheels and never get paint on tires.

Eastwood used to sell these wheel maskers. They are adjustable and work pretty good. You still get a little on the tire. Can't find these anywhere anymore.

In the past I have also bought those cheap plastic " for sale , for rent , garage sale " signs you get at the hardware stores, cut them in halves or thirds tape them together to make a ring to go around your rim you are wanting to paint. They work pretty well. Keep the pieces for the next time. Some how I never end up keeping the pieces.

I'll have to take a second look at this and see if that ring idea will work.

I've done a lot of cleaning out the last few years and I'm not sure if I still have it but there used to be a roll of coil stock laying around.....

That's pretty much what it is. I made 12 inch and 6 inch rolled flashing to fit . I didn't come up with the original idea but I can tell you it works great

Another option I learned from the body shop is that you can take some 1/8" rope, or larger depending on the gap and wedge between rim and tire. Tape to the rope, then pull it out after painting. Not sure if that could work in the this case, not sure just how your tire to wheel gap is.

It's a great idea and I appreciate it but it won't work for me this time.

I'll try to remember to take a picture of the wheels with the tires mounted. The rubber actually sticks out further than the metal.

Buy a quart or Rust-oleum Gloss White and paint them with a brush. You can wipe off any on the tires with a little paint thiner and a rag. Don't try to tell us you have to have the original Wheel Horse Color.

Hi just had similar situation I cleaned tire real good with krud kutter paint prep and just used blue edge lock masking tape a little bit of pia but once the little pieces at rim are set using screwdriver blade to tuck edge it goes quickly

Had some old coil stock laying around.

I cut that about 12" tall. Curled it out and gorilla taped it together in a circle.

Works quite well.

We'll scrape the small amount of overspray off later with a razor blade.

Oh, and @Dirtdog524 and @squonk, Trina says to tell you that whoever gave us that idea is a Genius and she appreciates your genius-osity.

She's right about impressed with the ease and simplicity of the idea.

If you can't take the tire off or don't want to, I take Xylene and wipe the rubber around the rim so masking tape sticks and use masking paper or plastic to cover the rest of the tire. If there is no rim lip, trim the masking tape with an X-acto knife.
