D_Mac 9,241 #1 Posted June 16, 2020 (edited) Well after I came back from picking my truck up at the garage < that was 700 bucks> I came across this little gem I couldnt pass up. They guy said his dad bought it brand new. He said he remembered he paid 3000 bucks for it back then. Not sure of the year...84...85...86 ? It has been passed around in the family now I have it. It seems to be in pretty good shape. Real dirty but solid and all there. The engine seems to run really well 16hp Kohler Magnum what do you expect. Seems the clutch needs adjusting not sure how to go about that. If you push the pedal all the way down you have to let off some to find the sweet spot to get it in gear. The low idle needs adjusting. Even with the trottle lever fully down it s it idles high. Its missing the plastic knob on throttle lever. when you lower the deck the front of the deck is low and scalds the lawn on the front of deck. The deck its self is great no noise out of the spindles, sounds great. I am asking myself why I got another as I have no place to put it. Its the addiction Lord Help Us. Bad news is I am going to have to leave it at a friends house. Going to kill me not to be able to tinker with it till I make room. Let me know what you all think. I have no knowledge of this model. I had a 308-8 once but didnt have the bells and whistles this one has. The ID sticker I cant read. Any other way to figure it out? gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,284 #2 Posted June 16, 2020 Post all the numbers of the engine decal including the serial number and we may be able to figure out the tractor's model number. I will guess it is a 1987 416-8 model 31-16K803 with magneto ignition and 15 amp stator The right brake pedal has a knob on it that lands on the footrest when the brake is off. Over time that bends the footrest down so it no longer stops the pedal. Bend the footrest back up and it is good for another 30 years. Garry 1 1
Sparky-(Admin) 22,320 #3 Posted June 16, 2020 Big one-lunger Kohler and an 8 speed, nice . Tough combo to beat! 3 1
JAinVA 4,636 #4 Posted June 16, 2020 Nice 416.I have a host of diifferent models both hydro and manual. The 416-8 I have has over 1200 hours and by far is my go to tractor. When the clutch is fully depressed the tensioner pulley assembly pins the drive belt against the belt support on the hood stand. This effectively keeps the trans pulley from rotating,so if the trans gears aren't aligned just right the clutch needs to be let out to help align the gears to shift.
953 nut 58,365 #5 Posted June 16, 2020 Are the foot rest pads right for a '87? My '87 418-C had ribbed rubber there.
D_Mac 9,241 #6 Posted June 16, 2020 (edited) I looked for a sticker on the engine I didnt see one. How do you go about adjusting the clutch?. Also what color originally where the color of the wheels? Gray ? Cant tell if its dirt or paint. 1500 hours on the clock but it runs really good. Edited June 16, 2020 by D_Mac

I was going by the serial number I think I can see. The engine data decal may be under the air cleaner box. Garry

D_Mac 9,241 #9 Posted June 17, 2020 (edited) @gwest_ca Tried to clean the tag so you can read it better. does that make it an 1988? Looks like PO ran over a volleyball net. Blades had rope wrapped around them. Couldnt find a tag on the deck either. Cant lift the hood to get to the air cleaner as it is pulled tight up against the bed of my truck. Wish I could power wash it before I bring it to my friends house. Gonna kill me to have it sit there. Keeping me from messing with it. Oh well Edited June 17, 2020 by D_Mac

D_Mac 9,241 #11 Posted June 17, 2020 Well I took a hose to it while it was in the back of my truck. I dont think it has been cleaned in 30 yrs. Grass, leaves, and nests everywhere. I got what I could get to but its far from clean. I had to take it to my friends house as my garage is full. After we got it out of the back of my truck I fired it up. That Kohler Magnum runs perfect. Its going to need new air filter as it is packed full of debris. Change the oil. Not sure if I will change the rear end. Also is that gear oil or motor oil in the tranny? I think I found the issue with the deck but I am not sure of the part number or what you call it. Its a little L shaped rod that seems to pass through a little trunnion at he back of the deck. It is broken at the treads. In the photo of the deck, top of the photo but the rear of the deck you can see that rod. Ill have to get one of those. Also the clutch I have to find the sweet spot on the pedal in order to shift gears. The brakes work but the parking brake wont engage. Its all original paint except for the wheels. It is going to clean up nice. I am only going to paint the deck. Paint on the deck is coming off in big sheets. I am going to have to part with one. I cant keep 4. the Speedanza, the Lambert, the C-161 or this 416-8..... ugh .... I need a bigger garage !!!! 3
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,284 #12 Posted June 17, 2020 This improved level rod may apply to your deck. Click on the fuzzy picture. Garry
chip61 664 #13 Posted June 17, 2020 Magnum 16 with a 48" deck-you did good on this one!! I like my Onan 16, but for simplicity you just can't beat the old Kohlers.
D_Mac 9,241 #14 Posted June 18, 2020 (edited) @gwest_ca I already ordered a replacement rod. Wish I seen that sooner. @chip61 Thank you. I think I did ok. Decent machines are hard to come by around here. This one was purchased brand new from one family. It was passed on from father, to a son, then the son passed it to a brother, who sold it to me ! Engine sounds great runs really smooth. Just curious how you knew it was a 48 inch deck? I dont think I mentioned the deck size. 48 looks different then a 42 ? I ordered the lift rod , it was 23 bucks. I have a differant seat I am thinking about putting on but this one isnt bad. Corners are torn like most all of them. The dash lights dont work but the head lights and tail lights work. Anyone have knowledge of working on the dash lights?. The one on the bottom is the only one that lights when I press the " test" switch. I think its the oil pressure light. I cant stand that its at my friends house and not here so I can work on it. Im gonna grab the deck and at least get that painted. I have room for that. Edited June 18, 2020 by D_Mac
chip61 664 #15 Posted June 18, 2020 Height adjustment lever is on left side on a 48".
