Tgalo 121 #1 Posted May 2, 2020 Pick up a 418 with a 42" snow blower last weekend. Farley low hours and very well kept. The guy said he didn't like the way it mowed, well I found out why when I looked under the deck... See pic 4 5 2
lynnmor 7,858 #2 Posted May 2, 2020 (edited) I bought a low hour machine from a guy that didn't like the way it cut as well. After I mounted the deck correctly, leveled it, set the transport height and put the belt in the right groove, it mowed just fine. That's the way to buy them, many owners don't know how to treat horses. Edited May 2, 2020 by lynnmor 2
c-series don 10,154 #3 Posted May 2, 2020 That’s a nice 418 ! I bought my commando 8 from a guy that said he didn’t like the way it cut. I got it home jacked it up and quickly realized that the blades were on backwards. It has two counter rotating blades so I switched them and it cut beautifully ! 2

Wonder why it didn't work.😂

Tgalo 121 #7 Posted May 3, 2020 Question on this tractor. The steering seems kind of hard. I jacked it up and everything is free as could be. It has a tiny steering wheel on it. Would a bigger wheel help? Im thinking about the 520 steering maybe

Tgalo 121 #9 Posted May 3, 2020 Yeah this just seems harder then my 85 312. Reduction steering would be nice for sure...
tom2p 2,394 #10 Posted May 3, 2020 (edited) could add some air to the front tires also - some tires will 'steer easier' than other tires ... I believe ribbed tires will reduce steering effort ... tires with reduced width should steer easier ... some turf tires with a more rounded profile / shoulders should steer easier (due to reduced contact patch) make sure all steering linkage etc is not binding and is properly greased Edited May 3, 2020 by tom2p
ronhatch 406 #11 Posted May 3, 2020 Some guys should have their "MAN CARD" revoked! Yes a bigger steering wheel will help a little. Also remove the spindles and clean out all the old grease, add PMPS and re-grease with fresh grease. Finally, pump in about 20 lbs of air in tires.
RandyLittrell 3,906 #12 Posted May 3, 2020 My 310-8 had its blades upside down when I bought it too! Randy

Like @ronhatch said, I lubricated everything well and it made a big difference. Not sure it had been lubricated for a decade or so. Nice looking find, love my 418 and the hydraulic lift is a wonderful thing to have when plowing snow.
