Blue Chips

I'm converting the oiling system in my M37's 230 engine to full-flow filtration. Here's what I've done so far:

 

Drilled holes into the output passage from the pump for the IN and OUT ports, and tapped them for 1/4" NPT:

Tapped the supply passage from the pump, straight thread 9/16-18. Used three taps, ending with a bottoming tap to form a nice 'shelf' to tighten the plug against:

Installed the plug between the IN and OUT ports. It came out perfectly placed between the port threads, so it won't interfere with the flow at all. Secured with Loctite 592.

Possible plumbing setup shown below (final setup to be decided after I determine where the remote oil filter will be mounted). I have plenty of clearance everywhere. The closest point will be about 3/8" from the edge of the valve compartment cover after all the fittings are tightened. These fittings are shown loose; they will drop down further when tightened, and I'll be shortening the taller stainless pipe by about 1/8 inch. I was originally going to use 1/4" NPT to AN-6 fittings in the threaded IN and OUT ports, but the NPT to AN-6 fittings I've seen had a smaller inside diameter than 1/4" NPT pipe, so I went with 1/4" stainless pipe going to AN-8 fittings instead of AN-6, so I should have a full 3/8" inside diameter all the way from the block to the filter and back.

Here are the plumbing parts for the full-flow setup. I shopped around quite a bit and cobbled these together from multiple sources:

This morning I started putting my radio in the new Explorer. Mounting bracket doesn't fit right, so that's on hold. 

 

About that time the wife got home and we have been working on the new shed ever since.

I've had one many years ago on a Chevy 350.

Of late I've been looking at doing so on my truck. 

The info I'm finding online shows that it isn't the best idea for a 300 inline six. Apparently the oil system is extremely strong and known to crack & blow out filters when clogged.

Yeah, if an oil pressure relief valve sticks closed, most lubrication systems can build up enough pressure to pop an oil filter cartridge. It happened to me once on a 360 cid Ford. A piece of debris, such as heavy dirt that got through a torn filter, or a bit of metal from a broken pressure relief valve spring, are some examples of a possible cause for a stuck valve. Even exceptionally heavy sludge can cause a valve to stick in some instances. Some motor oil additives for dissolving sludge can dislodge a lot of gunk in the passages that could make its way to the relief valve and cause it to stick.

 

This will be a very clean engine, with a new spring on the pressure relief valve, and all passages thoroughly cleaned, so it shouldn't be any more likely to stick closed than a brand new engine. :)
