8ntruck 8,861 #9651 Posted yesterday at 02:31 PM I really like that fireplace. I've always wanted to build a masonry arch. Might tackle a project like this on our property in Ky. Jealous of your weather. It has been a typical mid Michigan Memorial Day weekend here - 50's and drizzle or rain the last two days. Sunshine today, supposed to get into the 70's - just in time for the folks camping to pack up and go home.
Ed Kennell 46,076 #9652 Posted yesterday at 02:35 PM Back home after spending 5 cold rainy days at my sister's farm in western Pa. Over 3 inches of rain with a 45* high temp. I did manage to fill a spring gobbler tag on Saturday. Sorry, no pictures...wet turkey do not photograph well. Also attended my 65th Meyersdale High School reunion on Saturday. We do something unique, where we have a banquet every year at the high school for the graduating class and every class that graduated on the 5 year multiples of the current year. We had 2 from 1956, 5 from my 1961 class, 8 from my sisters 1966 class, and the numbers increased until a disappointing 8 of the 2026 class attended. The rain did have the forest floors covered in beautiful green ferns. A 340 mile long bike path passes along the farm in Sand Patch, Pa. Probably a 3 day ride for Mike @Sparky. This path begins in Washington, DC and follows the C & O canal tow path to the gap in Cumberland, Md., then follows railroad beds to Pittsburg, Pa going thru several mountain tunnels along the way. Here it crosses the lane into the farm. Stopped by Red Square Corner at the Big Show site on the way home. No bridges out and all roads in good shape leading to the Show. 6 2

Not sure if the other 2 's are going to cut loose with the cash for fuel and make it. Gonna miss the short walk to the concession stand for a burger. 1
squonk 46,563 #9654 Posted yesterday at 03:47 PM My home weather station recorded 2.75" of rain for this holiday weekend. Finally stopped so I can get some lawn trash to the curb!

We would park the travel trailer and do out and back rides as far as practical, then move to a new location and do it again. The only section that we rode one way was from Big Savage Mountain tunnel to Cumberland, MD, had no desire to climb back up that mountain.

Wallfish mentioned it this weekend, but I hadn’t heard anything about a food venue change? Won’t be at that building anymore ??

As kids on a double dare we had to run thru the tunnel while the trains were still running. 1

That's certainly a man made stream but I don't know the original reason.

You need to read some of the history of the CCC and the important role it played in bringing our country out of the great depression. MainelyWheelhorse 2,579 #9667 Posted 20 hours ago (edited) Today, I worked on the 308's deck issue, did some parts reorganizing, and I swapped furniture in my house around. This. For This. I consolidated my parts too. Edited 20 hours ago by MainelyWheelhorse

I am aware of the history of the New Deal and the role it, and the created local agencies, played in stabilizing the US and world economies after the US stock market crash. I have spent much more time studying the work of the TVA than the CCC. Some of the projects were worthwhile infrastructure investment. Many others were very much just make-work type projects so that the agency involved had something to show for the money spent. Dams and expansions of the electrical grid were firmly in the first category. Man-made streams are arguably in the second.

Up here in the White Mountains the weather can get pretty aggressive so sometimes they keep streams in the channels where the humans once thought they belonged. Handy Don 16,605 #9673 Posted 3 hours ago (edited) Where I grew up in PA, there were several state parks that were constructed or added-to by CCC workers. The cabins at World’s End come to mind, where we vacationed quite inexpensively--they are still being used and get booked extremely quickly each year when reservations open. Ricketts Glen is another. Our local high school has murals by CCC painters. There were also tens of thousands of rural homes that received a safe, sanitary, and functional outhouse (it wasn’t until 1947 that more than half the homes in the US had indoor plumbing). Yes, there was definitely an element of “make work” as a vehicle to funnel money into the economy, but the Depression was no picnic for millions. Coolidge and then Hoover were in office for the lead-in and then into the thick of it and Roosevelt from then on. The US was treading water, if not drowning. I often wonder how the US economy might have fared without the war in Europe and the subsequent involvement of the US--1935-1941 with the New Deal was unprecedented and justifiably contentious.
