Gas dryer has a screaming idler pulley, so replacing the idler, drum rollers, and belt. I much prefer working on tractors opposed to appliances.

Made a wonderful roast dinner in our 1930's Wagner dutch oven.... then made 4 loaves of sourdough bread! The house sure smelled GOOD all day!!!!

Got some more shop organization done. I wanted a place to put my CD collection in easy access to the stereo.

Not where I was originally planning but after much deliberation it fits the best here. 

 

 

 

 

I also started reorganizing the bolt and Hardware section some.

 

 

Everything that was once in this metal drawer will be relocated to more storage bins of various sizes.

We drove over to the Grand Rapids area for my post op appointment for last week's eye surgery.

 

All is well, restrictions are off, just continue the eye drop regimen for 3 more weeks.

 

Got back to my temporary winter tarp porch enclosure for the lake house.  Got the framing to where I think I need it, then started hanging the first tarp.  Had a pretty good breeze today.  Didn't  help at all hanging the tarp, but it did point out that my initial idea to hang the tarp wasn't going to work.  Going to try plan B tomorrow.

Took the Worx 5" chainsaw I got for Mrs. 8n along when I walked the dog today.  We walk on a section of the Fred Meijer Heartland Trail - a rails to trails conversion along the B&O rright of way.  Last weekend, there was a small tree that blew down and was leaning over the trail not quite blocking it, but in the way.   A couple of cuts and it was clear.  I also cleared a couple other places that were encroaching but not impeding the trail.

 

Mrs. 8n likes my 10" B&D battery saw, but has difficulty working the safety on the trigger.  We picked up the Worx saw because it is easier for her to run.  I've only made a dozen or so cuts with it, but it seems to be a reasonable tool. Biggest drawback, so far, is that the chain oiler is a 3oz plastic squeeze bottle - kind of inconvenient.

 

Got back to the porch project on the lake house today.  My plan B to hang the tarps seems to be working.  Forecast for the wind tonight is in the high teens.  Will be interesting to see if the 2 tarps I hung up today are still there in the morning.

I inherited a DeWalt shorty electric and have grown to like it a lot as a replacement for the pruning saw. Same squirt bottle oiler (yuck). But I may go back, as the extra arm exercise was probably a good thing for keeping strength and flexibility. I’d trade it for a power pole saw in a heartbeat, though!

My brother and I have been busy with chain saws this past year.  The family farm has fell into disrepair over the past thirty years after dad died. Some areas of cropland were reduced by up to 36' from fence row to first row of crops by intrusion of brush and trees.  We cut down some 200 saplings and several larger trees.  This pond dam pictured below was impassable until we cleaned it up.  I had never used a pole saw before and the electric ones really come in handy on a job like  this.

beat me to it. I couldn't believe how good they work only drawback is the way the head/bar is angled  makes it hard to cut up from bottom of tree limb.

Cordless electric chainsaws are very handy. I have several gasoline-powered chainsaws: An Echo, a Poulan, a John Deere, and a pole saw attachment for my Husqvarna strimmer, but my little Milwaukee M18 chainsaw is the one I use most often now. Since we downsized to one property two years ago, we're down to 2-1/2 acres, which is mostly wooded, but I don't need the big saws as much. I've cut down 12-inch-diameter trees with the Milwaukee, and it uses the same batteries as my other Milwaukee tools. It's also very handy for limbing trees once they're down, as well as trimming firewood.

 

Now that I think about it, the pole saw attachment 'might' (I'll have to check) also fit my wife's Milwaukee string trimmer (which I bought for her because she likes to trim around her garden and doesn't like to mess with gas engines very much).

Dog and I hopped in the truck and took a little 700 mile jaunt to our Mo. location. 

 

Highlights along the way:

 

Saw 2 white tail deer running along the edge of the woods next to the freeway just west of Lowell, Mi.

 

Saw a flock of wild turkeys off in a field in northern Indiana.

 

Saw a jack knifed westbound semi on the eastbound median shoulder with 2 heavy duty tow trucks working to get it loose

 

Danced with the truck on ice a couple times on Michigan 6, just south of Grand Rapids - kind of in @Pullstart neighborhood.  One of those dances was at 20mph - was really slick.  No, I don't  have 4 wheel drive - all those folks were in the fast lane flying by me.  Was kind of hoping to see one of them get out of shape.

 

Saw the aftermath of 2 rollover accidents - ice related.  Pretty sure both were 4 wheel drive - didn't seem to help them.  Remember folks, once a vehicle completely looses traction, physics takes over.  You wiil move pretty much in a straight line from where you got loose.  The faster you are going, the deeper into the puckerbrush you will end up.  If there is a hill or birm involved, like both accidents I saw, rollovers can result. 

 

Bucked a headwind most of the 700 miles.  That and the cold produced lousy gas mileage.

 

Saw a guy who was flying along passing people on the right get pulled over by a State Policeman just west of St Louis.  I smiled at that one.

 

Enjoyed temperatures ranging from 9 to 20 degrees F.

 

All in all, i'm happy to have arrived here safely.
