Today I mostly arsed about!

 

First off my free mower refused to start. New plug and a lot of faffing about later it runs ok.

 

Then I thought I'd sneak a look at my old Allen oxford powered scythe. Not run it for a few months since I just tested it.

Refused to start. Then started , ran for 3 minutes and cut out. Flatly refused to start.

Are these things both female?

Anyway. I deduced a carburetor issue on the Allen.

If you remember I bought a recon one which I never checked, assuming it was A1

Then I recalled the A B C of investigation.....

Accept nothing, believe no one, check everything.

I stripped the carb, it was missing the float valve lever so not refilling with fuel properly. Fixed that, still not good.

The choke flap was loose, wrong spring so I fixed that, still not good.

The centre needle tube should have had a fibre washer between the head of it and the carb body. It was missing so allowing air to be drawn in. Fitted new washer.

Now starts and runs.

Yay 

Problem is I now have a right shoulder like a line backer from all those pull start attempts.

Ps linebacker might not be the right term but I'm not an expert on American football,  maybe a quarter backs throwing arm?

Normally 4am to 11am then 4pm to 8pm then 10pm until 11:30pm. But we are tied up for half the trip due to Corona virus so until Sunday I am working 9pm until 8am, then I go into the shift pattern above. 

 

It gets pretty tiring on the watches as you don't get any long sleeps, and when it's rough weather you don't get any sleep at all.

In Aberdeen (Scotland) and we run up to Shetland.

 

She is about 120m long and 20,000 tons and 500 passengers. A baby in the European ferry world, it's like working on a toy compared to some of the ones I have been on in the past!

Continuing on new project. This one will be painted so I am trying to use all leftover materials from other jobs. Gluing up long miters on fireplace pilasters. Trying not to have any panic events on the glue up.

Looking good! I cant believe how quickly you work.

Looks just like the plans, I wish my work did that lol.

Today we moved the big lathe from Harworth village to our town about 25 miles.

We used a machine moving specialist who has a flat bed with a mini hiab crane. 

It was great to see the job done safely and professionally.

Today I messed about with my Allen scythe, modifying the fuel tank to include a stop tap.

I tried it for size in the new storage area (stable) and it fits just fine with all my other machines.

Most everything in the photo needed work when purchased. I seem to have a thing about not buying new. Trying to get over that now that I'm almost 70 as the ambition is starting to get less and less.

  I know what you mean.

 

  Emptied and moved, with number 2 grandsons help, a large garden storage box to the back of the house. Put the front tow ball attachment on the C-125 and moved my 12'x6' twin axle trailer off the drive and parked where the box was.

  I can now get my car in the drive and make room for visitors to park where it was. Maybe now the kids will stop parking on the grass when they visit.

I got this little shed for my mother some years back. She stored her riding mower < craftsman> in it. She told me the other day she didnt want it anymore. She was going to put the mower in her other shed because this one would not stay closed and for me to either take it to the curb or take it home with me. So you better believe I took it home. It has been well used. In its day it was nice. Doors open wide and the front part of the roof slides back so you can just drive the mower in and step off and out and close it all up. So I figured out a way to keep the doors closed and since I dont need to slide the roof open and closed I am just going to use it for storage. STORAGE FOR ANOTHER TRACTOR ! ! I have the Rat Rod Radio Flyer in there now but if I see another WH I have a place to put it !

Interesting how things change as we age. I would think years past that the same would happen to me but it seems the opposite is happening. At 63 now, although I am feeling physical limitations I am getting more ambitious. Its like I am feeling that I am running out of time and therefor I am trying to do more and more. Mentally it makes me feel fine but physically some of it is hard to keep up with.

I retired at age 58. For the next ten years there was no holding me back.  Except for being laid up for 6 months after and extensive back surgery and a short slow down for a heart stent.  I was having way too much fun to set still.  But this last year my age finally caught up with me and to be honest I'm just plain slowing down.  My mind still comes up with goofy schemes but the body is now in control. Guess it's about time.  Thankfully the sense of humor and the intellect still seem to be intact. 

I'm glad the 30 DeSoto came along as I've picked up a little steam again.
