My next custom Wheel Horse

I put together a table top out of some scrap OSB and a 12’ skid cut down to 8’ or so.  Hopefully the next time this machine moves off the lift, it’s under it’s own power.

 

The front of the frame was cleaned up and the hood mount is tacked on.

I dug this 2” x 3/16” angle iron out of my scrap/spares pile.  It’ll be great for stiffening this project up.

Calling all bridge builders, engineers and backyard wrenches, not necessarily in that order!

 

I plan to use this angle iron to rigid up this machine.  It’ll be upside down, as to resemble C channel from the inside.  The front will double up the 45 degree section.  It’ll be notched so that the two horizontal pieces will meet to be welded.  

 

Blue pill or red pill?  Does it not matter for this caliber build?  If the bottom piece was parallel to the top, I have some 3” wide flat stock that I could fill the whole length, actually creating that C channel.

I'd lean towards red pill if that has an extra cross member.

I could just as easily add another crossmember in the blue sketch, I just figured they were touching at the front bend... no real need to add one.  I have a bunch of this 3/16” angle...

okay so that being the case, what would be the difference between the red and the blue? Just the angle?

I'm still voting for red but I'm changing my reasons a little bit.

 

in consideration of the fact that you can add a cross brace to either one of the designs I don't know which one, if either, would be stronger.

 

For the sake of aesthetics and future modification possibilities I would stick with a parallel frame rail system.

 

Since you have flatstock to add to it I would vote for that as well.

 

Changing that whole arrangement to a large c channel wood eliminate 99% of the possibilities of Dynamic Loading even being so much as a concern.

I’m there with you on the aesthetics idea EB.   It’s not like I’ll have a lot of ground clearance issue with the front being so high!

Now, it looks for me more as a Dragsterframe or a Pullerframe, than a simply Dump truck.

i simply and really like that Shape.

And some memories come in mind - goood memories i had and i like to remember..👍

 

 

but how eric meant it‘s in the eye of the beholder.

The stiffness shall be imho a little bit more in blue shape, but thats secondary in that design,

except you plan an V6 as Engine... maybe

No V6 power here Stefan, this big guy will only have 6.5 horse powers.  I like the look of the triangulated frame, but it’s so long and narrow I’m afraid the 3” separation or 7” overall height at the transmission plate aren’t enough to make a difference.

Thinking out loud, and sometimes talking out loud to myself... the parallel beam would be much easier to fabricate.  I already know the kick up is a 45 degree angle.  I have proven that I can cut the angle iron to bend that way.  Anything I build will be stronger than what is there currently.  I think I’ll stick with what I know on this portion.

What's your plans for your feet? If going 2 seater the bottom bracing and the floor board support can be the same thing.

I haven’t yet thought that far ahead... but I have that tube bender, I could fab something out of round stuff if needed.

 

 

I cut the first parallel piece and have some height trimming to do before I cut it to length.

I'm thinking you need a couple of cross members.  Those, along with the additional stringers you are adding will help increase the torsional rigidity - better cornering performance, ya know.
