My first hydro. Charger 12 project.

Got it running and took it for a night time drive around the backyard. 

 

Something's not right in the linkage. I can't engage the park brake. 

 

Carb needs a rebuild which isn't a huge surprise. I don't think I've done that one yet.

Looks good! 

What are you doing to engage the parking brake? Only disengaging the hydro with the lever will engage the parking brake. Pressing the pedal just pulls it into neutral.

Oh yeah I know.  

It was working before I put the belt guard on. 

 

I'll tear into it sometime and see what's not happy.

The issue with the parking brake turned out to be a set screw that I didn't realize was in the path of rotation on the little adapter that I cobbed on to take up space of a bunch of worn parts.

 

Carburetor is surging up and down and I was reminded to check the set of the governor so I'll take a look at that. 

 

 

I'll be measuring up and ordering some hoses from a local company.

I bought a abused  72 charger10 years ago , the engine blew up the same year, I replaced  it with the same 10hp engine from a member on redsquare , this tractor has done everything , snowplow , moldboard plowing  etc , the hydro has never let me down.

Been messing with the idler linkage and I need to disassemble it a little to install a bushing or 2. 

 

I ha removed the voltage regulator to experiment with the location of the plow up/down control. 

Today I put that back on and made a changeto the wiring harness. I had used a wire that was a tad too short. 

Couldn't leave it there. 

Removed all the zip ties and reset the harness. 

It's no @JCM Jim plumbing job but it'll do.

Wiring is not my specialty for sure, looks tidy from here Eric. Glad to see you have had a little extra time to make some headway with that hydro. You will not be disappointed once you figure out what to do with your extra foot.

Got Trina's 867 out of the basement workshop and back to work. Still needs some lights installed and more weight but it's a LOT better. 

 

Now I can put some time in to this one. 

Hoping to see the new hoses within the week. 

 

I forget who but someone suggested to adjust the governor. Did that. It was a little off. Maybe that'll help...

 

 I also took out the belt idler shaft and took some measurements. Need to find some bushings.

I know Ed has a heated cab (this is a guy who sits out in the cold to shoot Bambi.) but I plowed for over an hour today no cab no foot control no power angle.  (If you aren't trying to change angle with blade on the ground very  little  effort.) Plowed at almost 7mph forward vs 2.5and 3.5 backing up vs 2.1mph.  Really not hard to figure out the controls.  Foot control power angle..2 more things to fail in the cold and the snow. KISS!!!

I'd LIKE the faster backing speed. 

I really can't go much more than (2nd gear at 3/4 throttle) going forward. Our yard is just way too rough.

been a while since I've plowed with a Wheel Horse - but I was so impressed with how well it plowed I did not mind clutch / gear shift / lever to lift blade / lever to change blade angle ...

but then again - when I was a kid (back in mid / late 60's) I would accompany my dad when he snow plowed ... I was the 'auto hubs' and 'power angle' :

 

I would get out of the truck (we actually had a Jeep and later an IH Scout at the time) and manually lock the front hubs ... and I would also get out and manually change the snow blade angle

That won't work. Loss hubs just get looser unless you fix them right.

Go back in the thread... They were replaced when I split the transmission.

I popped a couple bushings in around the idler support shaft. Made a huge difference. They'll get held in better later. JB Weld?

Also took the park brake handle off and stuck some appropriate sized washers on the pivot pin. MUCH better. 

 

Pics are at a tough angle but maybe you can zoom in. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Also took a few minutes and mocked up the hose setting. 

I'll adjust the position of the valve/handle then bolt it to the seat pan. 

 

Got the hoses and adapters from a great place in Gorham Maine. He deals with folks all over and if he needs pics or info I can be a middle man if needed.
