1054 engine options

I picked up a solid 1054. The only issue is , the engine smokes after it warms up. I'm going to pull the engine and rebuild it over the winter but I would still like to be able to use the tractor . My question, is there a newer Kohler engine that would bolt to the frame without modification or a mounting plate. Or, how about a larger K series, K341, etc. Thanks for the help. Steve

i think that k series would be a good swap, frame size is similar to later models, you might even be able to bolt it right down . you would also have to make an ignition swap with key switch and plug in wire harness to match your newer engine, it sounds  daunting , but i found it simple and worthwhile. look on line or search on this site for a used engine , that is close to you. resto moding your 1054 might be the way to go , if you are so inclined, you already have a solid chassis , a wire upgrade and engine swap  would get you back in the seat quicker.  do not mean to upset the purists , but its up to you  , good luck pete

I PUT A DIESEL IN MY 1054. VERY EASY JOB.  ANY MOTOR YOU USE WILL NEED WIRING WORK, BUT THAT IS NOT HARD.

You came to the right place for information on the 1054.

@953 nut  is the our expert on this tractor .

But if you go with a K series engine this post will help with the wiring. The lights and switches can also be removed or modified to work with the K engines.

Any K series 10HP to 16 will bolt down to the frame provided it's a lager base pan.  If you if you stick with the same style ignition system and an engine that uses a starter/generator it's a direct swop.  Can be found in 10, 12 and 14 HP K series.  Pay attention to the PTO/clutch and drive pulley they are specific to the year and tractor.  If your tractor doesn't have the PTO and clutch then all you have to worry about is the drive pulley, it runs the drive belt and the hydraulic pump.  Remove it with care.

Most used Kohler engines will be a direct bolt-up as long as they have a 1 1/8" crankshaft so you can use the drive pulley and PTO. If it has a flywheel starter you could use the same starter switch as on the Starter/Generator, or the S/G mounting bracket on your engine could be bolted in place of the starter keeping everything as is.

I put a newer 14 HP engine out of a blackhood on my 1267 and kept the starter /genny. I used the original  engine shroud by removing the stator and  the flywheel ring gear .

I upgraded this one with a newer 12HP  My intention was to have custom decals made, like you did. (1253)  just haven't got around to it.  Good looking tractor by the way. :handgestures-thumbupright:

I'm looking at cramming a K482 from a D-180 into my 1054. I have 2 of them sitting around and figured what the heck. I plan to hold on to the original engine if it doesn't work.

I may have to relocate the battery though.

That should solve the front end pushing when plowing with the 54" blade.

Have you tried roller chains wrapped around the front tires?
