1974 C160, dipstick tube

Recommended Posts

I finally remembered to ask about this:

My 1974 C160's dipstick tube does not fit tightly in the engine block (Kohler 16HP). Should there be maybe an O-ring just below the formed metal ring in the lower end of the tube?

I seem to remember this coming up in the past but I have no recollection why.

The dipstick tube and base on my Cinnamon Horse is pressed tightly together as it should be and there doesn't seem to be any way to separate them except maybe damage from a previous owner.

If yours is able to be moved but still snug, perhaps some JB weld after a careful cleaning?

Interesting coincidence Monday I pulled the dip stick tube out of my 16hp K341.  There was some residue that at first looked like a badly decomposed O ring. (there is no O ring and if you look at it an O ring would not help hold it in.) Turned out to be some epoxy that had oozed out from a previous repair attempt. The PO had used a center punch to put a bunch of divots in the tube to try to get it tighter and help the epoxy.  Do not know how long it had lasted .  i have had the motor for 5 or so years.  I Put in some more punch marks but used Loctite anaerobic flange sealant (515) claims to not be bothered by oil.  We will see how long it lasts....

I like that idea Paul.

Sort of like knurling something to make it a little bigger around.

Knurling would be ideal but I do not have the equipment to do it.

If not too loose I have had luck striking a surface with the corner of a file repeatedly-not as neat as knurling, but effective.

Thank you, guys. I will proceed accordingly. When I can spend some time on it, I will keep all of this in mind.

Yes, the dipstick on mine is similar to yours.

But, what I was trying to describe was the tube that the dipstick goes into, and specifically where the lower end of the tube goes into the block.

No o ring.

They are pressed in. Try to remove the tube from the aluminum casting. If so clean it and install with marine Tex.

if you have issues contact me via pm. I have several in the shop.
