What’s in your trail cam?

The only mouses I like are dead ones.  My peanut butter log roller bucket trap has been pretty effective lately. Of course, they need a refill on the can once in a while ...

The can gets peanut buttered and rotates on the heavy wire.  Meece don’t swim long and can’t climb out with 1-2” of liquid.  Winter time the liquid gets changed to something less likely to freeze and more likely to mask the dead smell, but summer time water just gets changed out when bodies are found.  I’ve also seen methods of sunflower seeds floating on the media as to create an illusion of a solid surface to jump into.  The ramp position and amount of peanut butter seems to make a difference, so I mark the ramp piece on the sides for proper bucket alignment.  They seem to reach the top of the can and feast a bit until the are tempted to reach far enough to fall in or they jump onto the can and it spins off.

I had this one on a cam the other day.   He had his rump right against the cam,  but note the right beam at the front of the deer.    Well out past his ear. I wish he was facing the cam.

If he has a matching left beam,  I believe he will be over 24" wide.    This is what causes me to pass smaller bucks.

That looks like one big old buck. Maybe he’ll show up again?

When I check my trail cams, I carry a small 4" screen SD viewer.    When I saw that pic, all I could think was a large cinnamon colored black bear which is rare in this area.

After putting it on the big screen, I could see the tail lines and finally the right beam.
