Dave Lyon 4 #1 Posted August 8, 2019 I recently purchased a 417-8 ( 1986 model year). I thought it was in fairly decent condition until I got it home. There is water in the differential. Most of the safety switches have been bypassed. The front by tires both point in opposing directions. I'm not sure if you can move the tie rod ends around on the center block. There is no adjustment for them. When I try to raise the deck using the electric, nothing moves, but there is alot of grinding noises. Sounds like trying to shift a manual transmission in gear without using the clutch. I'd like to find a complete service, repair & parts manual for this tractor. I once had a 308-8 that I bought new back in 1987. I gave it to a local mobile repair shop never to be seen again. I am a huge Wheelhorse fan. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

When you drain the water out be sure to jack up the front to get complete draining. Add a couple quarts of diesel fuel to the transmission and drive it around then drain that and replace it with 90 gear oil. There isn't a single manual for your tractor, but the ones @cafoose furnished and the thread @stevasaurus has done on transmissions should get you going in the right direction. oliver2-44 10,399 #5 Posted August 8, 2019 I've cleaned up two WH gear transmissions that had some real bad looking stuff come out of them by flushing them. Then I've had another that I couldn't get a clean flush after doing it a couple of times so I tore it down. It needed the full disassembly cleaning and a few bearings. Then there's the three 1960 ish transmissions. All had water, but one was pristine inside and the other two with pitted gears. Your on the right track doing some good maintenance on it. Remember to replace the rubber boot around the gear shift if it's in bad shape. That's where water gets in these transmissions. As for me, my theme song should be.....Water in my Transmission.....
SylvanLakeWH 27,653 #6 Posted August 8, 2019 One step at a time...Change / flush the engine and transmission fluids, clean, lube... In addition to the above comments, I would flush the gas tank and lines, new / add a fuel filter, clean the carb and put some new good gas in it... Enjoy!
Pullstart 64,776 #7 Posted August 8, 2019 @wheelhorseman is a vendor here that builds tie rod pieces that adjust, or you might find @A-Z Tractor has some good quality used parts. There is also a classified section here too, that you can search for parts or post a wanted ad. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/92-vendors/ https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/classifieds/

stevasaurus 23,102 #9 Posted August 8, 2019 Hi, and Welcome to Red Square. You should have Trans #110996...8 pinion differential with 1 1/8" axles. Look at Section V in this manual for step by step instructions if you decide to open up your trans. Use in conjunction with the videos.
