Pullstart 64,689 #1 Posted July 25, 2019 I have some questions and/or thoughts. I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time... I picked up this DB for this purpose, then the hubs, wheels and tires were donated to Frank. I do realize that Putt Putt would loose the front hanging weight while the mower is hooked up. 1) The sickle mower is 34” wide, the rear track width of Putt Putt is 36”. I know we’re not looking for pristine, but would the tires being an inch or so wider than the cut path affect the next pass? 2) The DB pulley is a clutch mechanism. Would I be better off using it as a solid pulley (always engaged) and use a mower pto engagement setup? 3) I have a snow plow frame I could use, or build from scratch for a mid mount or even front mount. Thoughts? If I use build a front mount, I could lift it like a snow blower with a flag mount or whatever they are called. That could possibly become the belt engagement! I see the pictures in the gallery from @APPALACHIAN EDGE and @Tractorhead mentioned this the other day... so I figured it’s time to dig it out and start scratching my head. Thoughts? If these were your project, how would you tackle it? 6
AMC RULES 37,147 #2 Posted July 25, 2019 Should be no sweat for you Kevin... to modify that DB mount to fit the frame.

Well this Jari mower is 36”, so my width issue is gone. I’m sure I could use the both of ‘em to make something work. And whaddaya know... it has a Clinton engine! Is this what I need for the girls’ RJ projects?
ACman 7,630 #6 Posted July 25, 2019 Should be easy peasy Kevin ! Mount for the front , a push bar like for a snow blower for your lift and some kind of belt pto setup . 1
JAinVA 4,629 #7 Posted July 25, 2019 (edited) Kevin, snowblower lift flag should be more than enough to raise the mower.Simple since the mower is probably much lighter than a blower. If you have a blower the belt system will help with drive system design. If the difference in weight is enough between the mower and blower you may need to couple the lift flag to the lift tube as gravity keeps all assembled on a blower.Luck,JImAnderson Edited July 26, 2019 by JAinVA

I’m on it! Thanks Jim! 2

Tractorhead 9,099 #11 Posted July 26, 2019 Hey Buddy, you ain‘t time for such complex things, you have to finish your Customer Project, 😱 i will store the Sicklebar instead, to keep you free in Mind for your Project..😇 😂 No? Ok, you win, it was worth a try 😎 😂 I see the simpler solution with the db mower more easy to connect to the Horse PTO. Just a longer Belt and a Beltspanner shall do the trick. Maybe you must rework a bit the transmission on the db mower with a Spring loaded spanner, to keep the mower still running even landscape wasn‘t straight, but thats no big deal for you. the idea with the Snowblower mount sounded to a perfect basement. If you made it screwed, you also be able to use the bar further for a snowblower. 👍
Pullstart 64,689 #12 Posted August 26, 2019 It’s a rainy day and I was waiting for parts for the vehicle in the shop, so I did some playing around with sickle mower parts! I don't yet have a set in stone game plan, but I need to clean all this stuff up anyways so a tear down is in good order. 3
Pullstart 64,689 #14 Posted August 27, 2019 So this bottom plate is bent and needs to be straightened. It will also need drilling, welding or both to adapt the wider sickle mower from the Jari machine. I just wish I knew how they assembled this with the nuts so far in there! No wrench I have will fit the nut with the counterbalance in the way. If Anything, I’ll weld a captive nut in the furthest holes upon reassembly!
Pullstart 64,689 #15 Posted August 27, 2019 With creative use of a prybar and a wrench and a crescent hammer, it’s free! I ground the welds on the bottom flush in hopes I can clamp it to the bench and heat it enough to straighten it out. 1
Pullstart 64,689 #16 Posted August 28, 2019 I fired up the hot wrench, warmed up the plate and clamped it down. Once cooled, I’ll release the clamp and check for flatness.

Pullstart 64,689 #18 Posted August 28, 2019 This piece, if machined properly, should mate the two sickle mowers together... then I’ll build the drive piece!
Pullstart 64,689 #19 Posted August 28, 2019 I squared up my work piece, then found an edge and drilled my pattern. I need to clearance for the sickle bolts and then I can try out for fitment! 4
peter lena 9,095 #20 Posted August 28, 2019 pullstart, sounds like and looks like trouble, a wheel horse guy with an idea ! i like your idea and approach to make it happen, if i can find a scikle bar i would like to set one up on my 3 series. we will be watching and pulling for you , good stuff, pete
Tractorhead 9,099 #21 Posted August 28, 2019 Looks good buddy, i yesterday get also some news, while talking to a Neighbour, he has a older unused Sicklebar with about 1,20m in one of his Shelfes. - He just forgotten in wich of the 5 it was 😂 He talked in the last 4 Years to his Boy‘s to trash it, but until now, they don‘t. he promised to me, to search next week for it and if he find it, i can have it.. 👍

Pullstart 64,689 #24 Posted August 29, 2019 I’m playing in the garage tonight for a bit. Squaring up non-critical edges to rotate the piece. Nothing is critical now that holes are drilled... it’s all for clearance now, but I like it to look appealing to the eye.
Pullstart 64,689 #25 Posted August 29, 2019 Using a dial indicator to pick up a hole... the readout doesn’t matter what it is, as long as it picks up 3 “sides” of the hole the same. For this instance, a couple thousandths is good enough!
